DIY A Gorgeous Wisteria Tree Using Super Affordable Materials

With their vibrant violet blooms and long twining branches, you can't deny the beauty and whimsy that wisteria trees provide. Although growing and caring for a wisteria tree is relatively simple outdoors, when grown indoors the plants will only reach Bonsai tree height and will require plenty of upkeep. Luckily, you don't need a green thumb to craft a gorgeous DIY version of this tree. Made with super affordable materials — craft paper, paper towels, cardboard, and a bit of paint – this fake wisteria tree is sure to add an enchanted feel to any room in your home.

This particular fake tree involves making your own petals out of paper towel, though you could definitely swap the handmade blooms out for some suitable fake flowers like these artificial hyacinth bushes. That said, the handmade blooms do add a special touch. Speaking of special touches, you can also add some twinkle lights to this project to up the magical factor. Before you get started crafting, you will also need to grab a few simple tools including a paint brush, scissors, a cup you don't mind putting paint in, a hot glue gun, and clear packing tape to adhere the tree to the wall.

How to make a wisteria tree out of paper

To make the trunk of your tree, take long pieces of craft paper and twist them around each other until you have a trunk-like shape. You can use a bit of glue or tape to hold everything together, then attach the trunk to your wall with clear packing tape. Double sided tape, thumb tacks, or staples could also work here.

To make the petals, cut oval shapes out of paper towels. Each oval equals one blossom, so you will need a lot of them. Next, fill a cup with water, put some purple or blue paint on your paint brush, then wash the brush off in the cup. Adding a little water to the paint will produce a beautiful watercolor effect. Dip your petals gently in the paint and water mixture, then use a paint brush to add a yellow dot in the center of each bloom. Set these aside to dry.

To make the leaves, mix green paint and water, dip sheets of paper towels in, wait for it to dry, then cut out leaf shapes. For the branches, cut out a strip of cardboard, then wrap the cardboard in that same green paper towel. For a more natural look, cut and fray the edges of your paper towel, then glue on your leaves. Use this same technique to create branches for your petals. You can reinforce the branches with a bit of craft paper, then attach them to the top of your tree trunk with tape. And now you have a unique decorative tree DIY that brings whimsy vibes to any room on a budget.
