Turn An IKEA Glass Jar Into A Unique Lamp With A Touch Of Greenery

Plants and light sources are two essential elements of interior design, regardless of the style you're working with. They can both help establish a comfortable and relaxing environment and also improve the visual aesthetics of the space they're in. However, it's not every day that you can combine both greenery and lighting into a single stunning fixture. But with a simple hack that uses an inexpensive VARDAGEN glass jar from IKEA, you can do just that. All you need to do is fill your jar with clippings of faux ferns, and then attach a lampshade and a battery-powered light bulb on top. The completed fixture is perfect for decorating your side tables and elevating your living room aesthetic. However, you could use it in just about any other space in your house as well.

To turn IKEA's VARDAGEN jar into a lamp, you'll first need a lampshade and a fake houseplant that you're comfortable cutting a few branches from. You might be able to find one in your local thrift shop or on resale sites like Facebook Marketplace. Another option is to purchase faux fern leaves without buying an entire plant. These CATTREE Artificial Fern Plants are one particularly chic example. Other than that, gather some super glue or E6000 Adhesive with Precision Tips for holding the lampshade in place.

How to assemble your greenery-infused lamp fixture

First things first, clean out the inside of your jar with some soap and water. Put the lid off to the side since you won't be needing it for this project. Then, use a pair of pruning shears to clip a few large branches or leaves from your artificial plants. Fern leaves look nice, but you can use just about any plant style. However, you might want to avoid stuffing your jar full of the plant pieces, or they might end up making the inside of the fixture look cluttered. Next, use your E6000 or super glue to attach the lampshade to the top of the jar, in a centered position. All that's left after that is to screw the bulb into place. If you don't have a spare battery-powered light bulb at home, you might want to get the Kandicyar Battery-Operated LED Light Bulb. It has a remote control and a dimmer switch; plus, it's rechargeable.

To further customize your new lamp, you could try putting some craft sand or decorative pebbles at the bottom of the jar, below the plant leaves. Once you're done with the project, use the fixture to brighten up a coffee table or style your floating living room shelves. The lamp could also be the perfect item for decorating your bathroom countertops without creating clutter, or perhaps even for sprucing up the sideboard in your dining room.
