Lately, it seems like everyone is jumping on the mushroom lamp craze with stores like IKEA, Wayfair, and West Elm each having their version of these fungi-inspired lighting fixtures. However, like any home decor item that's equal parts cute and trendy, these lamps often come with a sizable price tag. Luckily, there's no reason to buy new when you can DIY your own mushroom lamp with thrifted glassware and Dollar Tree solar lights. Whether you're looking to spruce up your home decor or add a whimsical touch to your garden, these DIY mushroom lights are a perfect addition.
This project comes together quickly and only requires minimal materials. You will need a clear (ideally beveled) glass bowl and a clear vase or drinking glass from the thrift store, paired with a Dollar Tree solar light, such as the Solar Cylinder Stake Lights. Because there is no glue involved, you can easily disassemble this lamp in the future if you need to use the bowl and vase for their intended purposes.
Assembling and customizing the DIY mushroom lamp
Putting these mushroom lamps together is pretty simple. Start by gathering materials from your local thrift store. The bowl serves as the mushroom cap, while the vase serves as the stem, so be sure to pick appropriately sized items. Next, grab your solar light. If you plan on using this lamp in an area that doesn't get much natural sunlight, consider using battery-operated string lights or LED puck lights instead.
To assemble the lamp, remove the ground stake from your solar light and place it inside the glass vase. Then, place your glass bowl on top of the vase upside down to create the mushroom shape. Then simply sit back, wait for the solar light to charge up, and enjoy the ethereal mushroom light you created. For a fun pop of color, swap out the clear bowl and look for depression glass instead. Alternatively, you can use some transparent glass paint (like the FolkArt Murano Transparent Acrylic Glass Paint) to add color to your mushroom lamp without preventing the solar light from charging.
