The Budget-Friendly Way To Turn A Postcard Into A Work Of Art

Finding unique, affordable souvenirs while traveling can be challenging. Postcards sure fit the bill, but they often end up gathering dust in a drawer or haphazardly pinned up on a fridge. However, there's a quick and easy way to transform cherished postcards into gorgeous wall hangings. The key is to frame your favorites in such a way that they look like miniature works of art. Not only will this add interest to your walls, but it will also help you declutter sentimental items.

Start by buying – or thrifting – a frame that matches your decor aesthetic, as well the color scheme of the postcard. Next, it's time to DIY a passepartout (interior cardboard frame), also called a mat or mount, to add depth to your project and make the result look more professional. Trace the back of your frame onto a sturdy piece of white cardboard, then cut along the line using scissors or an X-Acto knife. Now, place the postcard in the middle, trace it, and cut about 1/4 of an inch less than planned, so that the central opening is a bit smaller than the postcard. This way, the mat will keep it in place and ensure it doesn't fall through or move around once framed. At this point, you can put all the pieces together (attach the corners of the postcard to the back of the mat with tape for added security) and display your new artwork. Alternatively, you can elevate this simple project further by getting creative with your mat.

How to turn pretty postcards into gorgeous wall art

A pretty frame and classic white passepartout are enough to transform your favorite postcards into budget-friendly works of art; however, there are some simple ways to take this project up a notch. For a quick upgrade, choose a cardboard in a bold color or fun pattern. Alternatively, cover the cardboard with pretty fabric. Just keep in mind that the frame will need to close, so opt for a thin material, like linen. Cut out a rectangle that's slightly larger than your mat. Then, using liquid glue, attach it all the way around, pulling the fabric tight as you work. Using an X-Acto knife or scissors, cut out the center and glue the excess fabric down as well. Another great way to transform your picture frame into a statement piece is by using wallpaper to cover the mat, or even adding a coat of paint to the frame itself.

Once all the pieces are dry, your postcard will be ready for display, and you can even keep the DIY going by transforming old door hinges into the cutest little photo stands. Another option we love is using a large number of postcards at once by compiling them into a collage inside one big frame. This simple DIY truly puts your memories on display. Plus, you can make it even more sentimental by sending yourself the postcard from abroad, so it'll have the postmark and date stamped on the back. You can even write down your favorite memory from the trip for posterity.
