Make A Gorgeous Cherry Blossom Tree With A Simple And Budget-Friendly DIY

Creating beautiful home floral decor doesn't have to cost a fortune. You can easily make an array of botanical-themed crafts yourself, whilst working on a tight budget — from using tissue boxes to create a stunning floral arrangement, to crafting a faux cherry blossom tree out of kitchen paper.

Cherry blossom trees have become increasingly popular with home design enthusiasts, due to their undeniable beauty and for what they symbolize. They originate in Japan and are recognized in East Asian culture as representing the beauty and fleeting nature of life. But, as much as you love these trees, you might not be thinking of planting cherry blossoms in your home yet. In that case, consider making your own faux tabletop cherry blossom tree, using an affordable everyday item that you would find in your kitchen.

What you're going to need for this craft project is a roll (or two) of kitchen paper, scissors, your choice of liquid watercolors, a paintbrush, some craft wire, and Mod Podge glue. So, the overall cost of this craft shouldn't be so much, depending on how big or small you'd like your cherry blossom tree to be, and it should take you a day or less to complete.

How to complete a DIY cherry blossom tree

To create your very own cherry blossom tree, begin by cutting out individual squares of kitchen paper. One square of kitchen paper will give four cherry blossom flowers. Next, use liquid watercolours and a paintbrush to carefully decorate your kitchen paper. For a traditional cherry blossom effect, paint a window in pink and color in the four squares with yellow. Leave the pieces of paper to fully dry out and stiffen; this might take a few hours. Cut each corner of kitchen paper into a flower shape and pierce the center using a sharp stick to create a hole through which a wire branch can easily be fed.

Now, for the branches. Create your desired branch shapes by twisting crafting wire, and take long, thin pieces of kitchen paper to gently wrap around it. Use Mod Podge to completely cover the kitchen paper, which will securely stick it to the craft wire. Once this is fully dry, you can paint your branches in an authentic brown shade to make them look as real as possible.

Ways to display your cherry blossom tree

If you want the cherry blossom tree to be tabletop sized and to stand up on its own, you'll need to create a thick trunk at the bottom and mould the lengths of wire into a curved shape to act as a secure stand.

However, perhaps you don't want your cherry blossom tree to be sat on a surface, but would prefer it to be in a pot. If this is the case then you're going to need a way of displaying it properly. Pick up a suitable sized basket or pot that you'd like your tree to live in, fill it with floral foam and pierce the foam with the trunk of your cherry blossom tree to neatly secure it. For an authentic appearance, cover up the floral foam with a layer of faux moss to make it look as real as possible.
