Nothing says "I love America" more than creating something really awesome by hand. The 4th of July is a great reason to invite friends and family over for a memorable outdoor shindig. As is the case with any celebration, it's always best to prepare your home for your party ahead of time and have your decorations queued up and ready to go. What if you're looking for a way to celebrate the patriotic-themed holiday, but need to decorate your home on a budget this year? There is one idea that can save you a bit of money on those packs of mini flags often purchased from the supermarket at the last minute. You can create your own customizable decorative mini American flags using fabric bundles, ribbon, and Ktojoy wooden rods.

One of the best things about this DIY décor project is that it is super budget-friendly. For example, the Waverly fabric bundles and similar ones from other brands come in different colors and patterns, allowing you to make amazingly diverse patchwork-themed flags, if you want to stray away from the standard stars and stripes. The fabric bundles can be purchased for less than $7 a pack, while Meedee ribbon bundles cost $9, and the wooden dowel rods are $4 per pack. You also need thread, a needle, a pair of scissors, and E6000 craft adhesive to complete this easy project. This fun DIY home décor idea on a budget can help create some cool party favors or a perfect take-home gift for your guests that they're sure to love.

How to make and customize DIY mini American flags

Note that if you're creating dozens of flags, it may be best to perform each step in batches to save time. Start by cutting a 4x6-inch fabric piece for the main section of your flag (the striped area). Next, cut a 1½ × 2½-inch piece for the starred area on the upper left of the flag. Then, thread your needle and attach the star section to the upper left corner of your main section. However, if you don't have a needle and thread, you can also apply a small amount of fabric glue to the edges of the starred section to attach it instead.

Next, take a wooden rod and cut it down to 6 inches with scissors (or cut multiple using a table saw). Then, place a thin strip of glue on the back left edge of the main fabric, and firmly press the rod against it. Let it dry fully before adding your bells and whistles. Finally, tie your decorative ribbon to the rod, beneath the fabric.

In addition to ribbons, you can also mix and match different fabric types. For example, if you have leftover pieces of fabric hanging around the house, consider using them for your party favors. Another way to customize your flags is to fray the sides for a more farmhouse or vintage feel. If you're a pro with a sewing machine, consider adding colorful zig-zag stitch patterns when sewing the fabrics together. You can also add iron-on patchwork (such as mini hearts), various shapes using acrylic paint, or other materials to make these mini flags more lively.
