Having a working washing machine is a necessity for most homeowners. And whether you have a front-loading or top-loading washer, a top brand or a more affordable one, your machine will see thousands of wash cycles in its lifetime. The ironic thing is that at some point, it will need its own washing. Why? Because these appliances can become a hotspot for mold-inducing bacteria due to repeated exposure to water and soiled clothes. Dirt spots, grimy build-up from detergents, mineral deposits, and odors may also impact your washing machine. However, there are two ingredients that you likely have in your pantry that can get rid of all of these issues and help you keep your machine sparkling clean. The ingredients — vinegar and baking soda.
When used together, these two common household staples create an effective cleaning solution for your washing machine. The antibacterial properties of Iberia distilled vinegar, combined with the deodorizing capabilities of Clabber Girl baking soda, pack a double punch to remove odors and break down bacteria inside the washer, which may seep into your clothing.
Many manufacturers recommend you clean your machine every six months. Keep in mind that issues such as clogged filters, hoses, or other obstructed components can lead to poor performance or costly repairs. And if your washer has passed its warranty, this means that you are paying out of pocket. And no one wants that...well maybe except the repairman.
Steps to clean washing machine using baking soda and vinegar and helpful tips
So, what is the best way to clean your washing machine from top to bottom? For top-loaders, empty the drum and set the machine to the self-cleaning setting on the longest and hottest setting. As the drum fills, add 3 to 4 cups of white vinegar. Then stop the cycle after a few seconds, letting it soak for a minute. Then, add 1/2 cup of baking soda and do the same, but this time, let it soak for an hour before cycle completion.
For front-loaders, add 2 cups of vinegar to the detergent dispenser and 1/2 cup of baking soda to the softener dispenser. Next, mix 1/2 cup of baking soda with 1/2 cup of water to form a loose paste and pour it into the detergent dispenser with the vinegar. Then pour 2 cups of vinegar into the washer drum, along with 1/2 cup of baking soda. Start the self-cleaning cycle. Once the drum fills, pause it for 30 minutes to let it soak, then restart the cycle. When finished, leave the door open so it can dry.
During a deep-cleaning session for both loader types, take an AIDEA microfiber cloth and wipe down all knobs, handles, and the lid using a solution of diluted vinegar or a mild cleanser. A toothpick can be used to remove debris from your detergent dispenser or other crevices. Do not forget about that lint trap. Replace the lint trap near the back of the washer if needed. Also, use a damp cloth to remove any grime around the rubber door gasket if you have a front-loader.
