Transplant Seedlings Into Your Outdoor Garden With Ease Using The 'Gutter Glide' Method

Normally when plants start to grow in your gutters, it's a sign that you're overdue to get your roof and gutters cleaned. But a clever strategy of using a small piece of gutter (that isn't attached to your roof) to grow seedlings has been taking the internet by storm. Not only can you use gutters to create an animal-proof vertical garden, but even plants that will eventually end up in a garden bed can benefit from being started in a piece of gutter before being transplanted. Considering all the different styles of containers and seed starting hacks available, you might wonder why you would want to start your seedlings in a piece of gutter. The answer is because it makes the transplanting process so much easier.

Some plants, especially those with more easily damaged taproots, can be notoriously difficult to transplant without causing damage. However, when you start these seedlings in a gutter, you can easily and gently "glide" them out of the gutter and into their permanent growing bed without disturbing the roots at all. This makes it perfect for plants like carrots. Just make sure you set up a trench in your garden for your seedlings to go into, and then when you're ready, carefully glide the seedlings out of the gutter and into the trench.

Transplanting seedlings has never been easier

An ideal piece of gutter for seed starting should be about 4 inches deep and around 3 or 4 feet long. You can still use your regular seed starting mix. Follow the instructions on the seed packet to decide the depth and spacing of the seeds, and water them in. Then it's just a matter of putting your piece of gutter in a warm, bright space and watering regularly. With the perfect grow lights, your seeds should begin germinating in no time.

Once outdoor weather conditions are right, you're ready to harden off your plants. Then, when the seedlings are ready, dig a trench and gently glide your gutter of seedlings and potting mix in. Gently pat down the soil around the seedlings, and water them in well. With care, your seedlings should quickly adjust to their new home and begin growing you a beautiful garden.
