The IKEA Trundle Bed May Work In Your Room, But Is It Worth Buying? What Buyers Actually Say

Maximizing space seems to be a priority for most people these days — whether it's organizing and decluttering kitchen countertops or finding a way to fit all your toiletries under the bathroom sink. Space is valuable, and not everyone has a lot to spare, so making the most of it matters. That's where the IKEA SLÄKT bed frame equipped with a trundle comes in. It eliminates the need for two separate beds in one room, which is perfect if siblings are sharing a space or if you need an extra spot for overnight guests. The catch? The quality could be better, according to buyers.

Made from a mix of fiberboard and particleboard, the IKEA trundle bed is reasonably priced at $349 for what's essentially two beds in one. It includes the twin bed frame, two LURÖY slatted bed bases (which usually sell for about $30 each), and a pull-out twin trundle with two storage drawers. The frame itself measures just over 77 inches long by 40 ½ inches wide, and there's about a 7-inch height difference between the top and bottom bed slats.

Do note that the $79 ÅGOTNES mattresses as well as the sheets and pillows aren't included. That said, each bed fits a 38 ¼-inch wide by 74 ⅜-inch long mattress and can hold up to 220 pounds. Regarding mattress thickness, while the main bed has no restrictions, the trundle mattress can only be a maximum of between 3 ⅞ and 4 inches thick.

Pros of the IKEA trundle bed

The IKEA SLÄKT twin bed with trundle has earned a little over four stars from more than 900 reviews, so it seems customers are pretty satisfied with the product. Many call it a "great" bed for the price and a solid choice for kids' rooms, especially if sleepovers happen often. One parent with eight- and five-year-old sons appreciated that it added tons of storage space, noting it gave them an extra spot to stash linens. Then again, the drawers can also be used for kids' clothes or even toys. Others said the bed helped open up the room, giving their little ones more space to play.

For some families, the bed works perfectly as a transition piece for children moving out of their toddler bed and into a big kid bed. The trundle can help cushion a fall if they roll out during the night, and later on, it doubles as extra sleeping space. People not only appreciate the affordable price point but also highlight how sturdy and practical it is. The rounded edges are another win, with no sharp corners to worry about, which parents can attest is a big deal if kids are playing nearby or walking past it.

Better yet, you can use two IKEA trundle beds pushed together to create almost a king-size bed, giving you four places to sleep. Take things a step further by adding your own footboard and headboard cover. Just be sure to pop a cushion in the middle to smooth out any dips.

What people don't like about the IKEA trundle bed

One of the biggest issues customers found with the IKEA trundle bed is the complicated assembly process. So, don't expect it to be featured on our list of the 10 easiest IKEA products to assemble. One person even suggested at least two people assist. Despite it being a "long" process for some, one reviewer noted it was "well worth it." However, not all experiences were positive. One IKEA enthusiast felt the quality wasn't up to her usual IKEA standards. "It was almost impossible to install the carriage bolts attaching the head and footboards to the side rails," she wrote. Another complained about the slats' support rails snapping, leading to the slats constantly falling out.

While still on the topic of slats, another buyer reported that theirs fell out because they used a wider mattress that put pressure on the sides. Therefore, it's implied that there's no wiggle room when it comes to recommended mattress sizing. This can be a burden if you can't find the right size in stock, as one shopper experienced when searching for a trundle mattress. Additionally, one reviewer noted that the bed was particularly noisy during use. Now, it's worth noting that these weren't isolated complaints, as many others agreed with these reviews. Overall, though, customers generally like and recommend the IKEA trundle bed. However, it seems like it's more of a suitable option for small children or overnight visitors.
