When it comes to putting their extra TP rolls somewhere, most people will usually get practical and just try to hide their extra toilet paper under the bathroom sink. The less creative among us will drop a few on the back of the toilet, and while this is unsightly and even a smidgen dangerous if the rolls fall into the bowl on occasion, it does get the job done. And then, there are those who know how to upgrade their toilet paper storage by DIYing a basic TP canister to give it a bespoke look that matches the bathroom perfectly.
For these clever bathroom DIYers, the project starts with a basic plastic toilet paper canister from the InterDesign Store. The 6.25-inch by 6.25-inch by 15.5-inch construction holds three of the four rolls of TP that come in a basic pack (the fourth one rests on the spindle, of course). This basic hamper comes in hues like white, black, silver, and bronze and will only set you back about $17.
However, to make it fancy schmancy, you'll need a few more items for this DIY, especially if you'd like the canister to match your bathroom decor. You'll need some spray paint and decorative decals from Dollar Tree to give it some zip. Or you could try this 16-piece stencil for painting butterflies and hummingbirds from Zonon if you're feeling extra creative while DIYing this simple bathroom upgrade.
How to DIY the TP canister
The basics of this spray-painted DIY are pretty simple. It's in the design decisions you make to give it some extra decorative flair that makes this one a DIY for the decorating books. The hamper and its lid get a couple of coats of spray paint before the decals or stencils are added. If you're looking for a uniform design, apply the same color of spray paint to the lid and the canister. However, if you'd like something more eye-catching, you have a couple of options. The simplest is to paint the lid one color and the canister another. Or you can paint the knob on the lid and the canister one color and the lid itself a second color. So this might be something like a black lid with a red knob that sits on top of a red canister.
And if you've gotten into the stripe drenching trend, look to the CrafTreat Store for Reusable Geometric Striped Stencils. Give the hamper a couple of different striped patterns, whether you want them to go vertically, horizontally, or both ways. The concept does work the same way with plain ol' pattern drenching. So if stripes aren't your thing but you're into all kinds of patterns in your bathroom, go with flora, fauna, or something else when you're stenciling or decaling the pail. Finally, you'll want to decide on glossy or matte spray paint. If you're into shabby chic, for example, matte paint might be in order. Conversely, something like Rust-Oleum's Ultra Cover Gloss Apple Red paint might be just the thing you need to add vibrancy to your bathroom.
