Whether you're working from home or relaxing on your porch, seeing a little bird perched nearby is an absolute delight. Of course, one of the best ways to ensure these feathered beauties flock to your yard is to provide them with a food source. Now, there are all kinds of gorgeous bird feeders on the market that will work. But if you're someone who loves a good DIY, why not make a beautiful bird feeding station from repurposed materials instead? With a stemmed glass and an ornate glass bowl from your bar cart, you can easily put together a platform feeder that's equal parts stunning and functional.

For this project, you will need the previously mentioned glassware, a strong, clear adhesive suitable for glass (E6000 works great), and some hanging wire. Optionally, if you have little charms or crystals, consider attaching those to the feeder as well. This project is great if you're looking for ways to repurpose drinking glasses that no longer match your dishware. If you don't have a bar cart with outdated glasses, head to your local thrift store to find these items at a bargain.

How to build a bird feeder using wine glasses

To assemble your bird feeder, start by giving your glassware a good wash. Keeping the glass clean will help the glue adhere better. Once your pieces are dry, add a line of glue around the rim of your stemmed glass. With your bowl facing upright, carefully place the stemmed glass inside your glass bowl, adhering it to the middle/bottom of the bowl. Allow the glue to dry completely. Now would also be the time to glue your embellishments (whether crystal beads, stylish coasters, old hardware, or decorative jar lids) to the foot of the glass.

Next, wrap your hanging wire around the stem of your glass right under the foot. For better balance, you can also secure it from the middle so that you're left with two wire arms on either side of the stem. Twist the ends of those arms together to create a loop. Then, use that loop to hang your feeder from your deck railing or a shepherd's hook.

Want to make this DIY bird feeder a little more custom? One clever way is to use additional glassware to turn it into a tiered feeder. Another (simpler) option would be to choose colored glassware to brighten up your bird station. Keep in mind, with the current configuration, this bird feeder is considered a platform feeder. This means that it's best suited for ground-feeding birds. If you're trying to attract a different type of bird, you may need to try a different setup.
