How To DIY Your Own Faux Antique Mirror From Any Glass

There's something about decorating with mirrors that seems to add an extra layer of character to a room. Not only can they create a greater sense of depth, but they also provide a way to redistribute light in spaces where it may be limited. And if you're someone who loves antique mirrors, you're probably aware that thrift stores and flea markets are some of the best places to shop for vintage furniture

But what if there were a way to style your own antique mirror without spending over $400 at Pottery Barn? Fortunately, there is a way to do this. With just a couple of cans of spray paint and a regular glass pane, a DIY faux antique mirror can be standing in your living room in about an hour. Creating the aged look of a vintage mirror can be done fairly easily. One of the spray paints that you need is Rust-Oleum Mirror Effect, a specialty spray paint that creates a shiny, reflective appearance similar to that of a mirror. In addition to this, you'll also need a can of black spray paint as well as glass cleaner, paper towels, and a tarp to protect your work area during the paint job. The spray paint can be purchased for under $10, and you can find a really great full-length mirror for under $40 online or locally — and it doesn't have to be an antique.

Steps to create a faux vintage mirror using spray paint

It's best to work on this project outdoors or in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling too many paint fumes. If working indoors, you may also want to wear a KYFLZL paint mask to be on the safe side. Start by cleaning both sides of the glass with glass cleaner and paper towels, removing any dust or other residue that may affect the final appearance once the paint dries. Next, give the back of the glass a light coating of the mirror-effect spray paint.

Then, take the same bottle of glass cleaner used previously, and drizzle the cleaner on the back of the glass as well. This will cause the paint to bubble. Immediately spray the glass again with the mirror paint and wait a few minutes. Next, grab a handful of paper towels and pat dry the wet areas where the glass cleaner remains. Repeat these three steps once more, painting the mirror, dripping the cleaner onto it, and then patting it with paper towels. Wrap up the project by spraying the back of the glass with the black spray paint and letting it dry.

Creating a vintage-style frame to complement your new faux antique mirror is a great way to finish this project. Painting the frame with weathered stain, gold leaf, or chalk paint can enhance the aged look that you're going for. Also, adding scuff marks with sandpaper can create awesome distressed texture and a rustic feel. You can also take the vintage design to the next level by adding a few stencil designs directly onto the glass.
