Add A Pop Of Color To Your Sloped Yard With A Beautiful Pink Ground Cover

Having a sloped yard can create some challenges, as you've undoubtedly learned if you own one. While you may enjoy spectacular views, gardening on a slope can be difficult, and your yard can be prone to erosion if left bare. Fortunately, there are also plenty of plants and shrubs that grow just fine on slopes, helping to add beauty and color while also stabilizing the soil. One of the best options to consider is the beautiful fringe flower (Loropetalum chinense).

With an average height of between 6 to 8 feet, fringe flowers aren't always thought of as ground cover plants. However, dwarf cultivars like the adorable 'Jazz Hands Mini,' which grows to only about a foot tall, could be perfect for that use. This cultivar boasts lovely pink blooms, which will give your sloped landscape a much-needed pop of color. That said, you can find varieties with purple, red, and white blooms, too. Many fringe flower cultivars also have colorful leaves, ranging from greens and reds to brilliant purples.

Caring for your fringe flower ground cover

Native to China, Thailand, and Japan, fringe flowers can be grown as perennials in USDA zones 7 through 9. While they thrive in a range of soil types, they benefit from a well-draining growing medium. And although fringe flowers appreciate moist soil, they are surprisingly drought tolerant once established. Make sure to plant your fringe flowers in a location that gets at least part, if not full, sun.

Considering how easy it is to care for fringe flowers, you might be tempted to plant your entire sloped yard with these beauties. The variety of different cultivars available makes this a reasonable choice, and a landscape filled with fringe flowers could be stunning, with ground cover cultivars planted in front of their larger, shrub-like relatives. The fact that they are evergreen to semi-evergreen means your yard may even have winter interest. Fringe flowers are even deer resistant, so you don't have to worry about your beautiful landscaping getting nibbled away.
