Keeping your garden tools organized is one thing — But if you can find a clever and visually appealing way to do so, it brings it to another level! While an old toolbox might not seem like a charming container for storing your most essential gardening tools — with a few easy steps, you can upcycle one into a piece that can be proudly mounted on the wall.

First, you'll need to get your hands on an old toolbox — whether it's from a thrift store, garage sale, or perhaps one that's been collecting dust in your garage. If you can find more, even better, as there are many creative ways to repurpose a toolbox around your home. When the TikTok creator @our_upcycled_life spied one in a scrap metal bin, along with a pair of brackets, she knew it had the potential to be the perfect storage solution for her hand tools. Ready to roll up your sleeves?

How to transform a toolbox into a gardening organizer

The TikToker starts by drilling holes into the bottom of the toolbox, allowing her to attach the decorative brackets using nuts and bolts. (Note that it's advised to always wear a face shield or safety glasses when using a powered hand drill). Additionally, she drills two larger holes to keep rain from getting trapped inside the box, which could lead to metal items becoming rusty. Fortunately, there's an easy trick for removing rust from your gardening tools. After adding a couple of extra holes to the back for mounting purposes, her toolbox is ready to be hung and filled with outdoor essentials, like gloves, pruning shears, and hand trowels. As she explains in the video's caption, "Turning rust into greenery!"

One of the best things about this upcycle is that it's completely customizable. Paint the toolbox beforehand to match your home, or seek out a vintage version from a thrift shop for a rustic look. You can even spray it with Rust-Oleum Clear Spray Paint for an inexpensive layer of protection. In addition to having a place to store your garden tools, you can also add mini plants or flowers to give it an extra pop or stencil your family's name on the box. The sky's the limit with this fun project.
