Accent walls are great for adding visual interest to a room without overwhelming the space with bold colors or patterns. They also allow you to showcase your personality and decorating taste on a single surface, instead of with small items that are scattered throughout the room. Accent walls can even highlight a room's architectural features, and help break up a monotonous or neutral color scheme. There are many different ways you can create such a fixture in your space, from painting designs to hanging up wooden panels. Adding picture frame molding is another simple yet popular option. There is a unique way to take an accent wall with picture frame moldings to the next level, though. This hack involves adding decorative peel-and-stick wallpaper to the interior aspects of the molding. This creates the illusion of wall art, but with an interesting visual twist.

A trim molding and wallpaper accent wall is an incredibly affordable way to add interest and beauty to your space. If you already have picture frame molding on your wall, all you need to buy is some peel-and-stick wallpaper, which can be found on Amazon for under $7 per roll. Yasinet floral self-adhesive wallpaper, for example, is an elegant yet inexpensive option. Even if you're starting your accent wall from scratch, this is still a budget-friendly DIY, since picture frame wainscoting isn't too pricey either. Of course, the amount you spend will depend on the size of the moldings you choose, as well as the style and brand of your wallpaper.

How to DIY an accent wall with trim molding and wallpaper

The first step of this project is to measure your wall, and then determine the size and preferred arrangement of your picture frame molding. For example, you may want a wall full of tall rectangular frames that stretch from floor to ceiling. Or you might prefer something a little more reserved, with a just few large square frames below a chair rail.  Since an accent wall is all about personal taste, there is no best or worst way to do this project.

To install the picture frame molding, you will need to measure and cut its corners at 45-degree angles. Attach the corners of the frame molding together using construction adhesive and corner clamps. Then, secure the frames to your wall using a nail gun. When you've got your frames where you want them on your wall, measure and cut your peel-and-stick wallpaper, and then place it on the wall inside the frames.

Although peel-and-stick wallpaper is a simple option, this project can also be done with unpasted or pre-pasted wallpaper as well. The application process for pre-pasted wallpaper can be daunting and messy, though. If you're working with unpasted wallpaper, you'll need to purchase wallpaper paste. Whatever type of paper you choose for your accent wall, though, you will love the finished product of this DIY.
