The Brilliant Closet Storage Hack That Comes From A Few Dollar Tree Must-Haves

Most closets are built to hold the basics, like T-shirts, jackets, jeans, dress pants, and dresses. But when it comes to keeping folded items and smaller stuff organized, like undergarments, bras, ties, hats, and accessories, there's rarely a dedicated space in a standard closet setup. Sure, you can stack them on a shelf or tuck them into a dresser drawer, but that usually leads to clutter. Not to mention, your favorite pieces are more prone to getting lost in the mix. And what about the folks who don't even have a dresser — college students living in a dorm or off-campus housing, for example? That's where this Dollar Tree DIY closet storage hanger hack comes in. It's a super simple and budget-friendly way to organize folded garments and smaller items so you can maximize your closet space

This DIY basket storage solution isn't just great for holding shirts and pants — it's also perfect for organizing undergarments, socks, scarves, and hats. It's especially handy for anyone short on closet or drawer space or for those just looking to make a little more room for their fashion essentials like belts. It's one of the clever closet hacks you didn't know you needed. For this hack, you'll need three Essentials Rectangular Plastic Baskets, six Essentials Plastic Clothing Hangers (usually sold in a six-pack), and about 20 zip ties, which you can also grab at Dollar Tree in a pack of 30. You can also customize the pieces you use to make the hanger fit your needs more effectively.

DIY a three-tier basket closet storage unit

While you have several options for DIY closet storage solutions, this one creates hanging baskets in a few simple steps. Start by attaching two hangers to one basket. To keep it neat and intentional, place the bottom bar of one hanger along the longer top edge of the basket. Secure it with zip ties, one on each end, so the hanger can support the basket. Repeat the same step on the opposite side with a second hanger. Don't worry if your hanger sticks out past the basket a bit, just make sure it's centered. Repeat these steps for your second and third baskets so you end up with three baskets total, each with two hangers zip tied to the sides.

To connect your first and second tiers, take the top, rounded part of the hook from one hanger and place it underneath the middle of the bottom bar of a hanger from one of the other baskets. Use two zip ties to hold it in place. Do the same on the opposite side. Just place the hook under the bottom bar, no need to overlap it, and add more zip ties. Repeat these steps again to attach your third tier. Once complete, trim any loose zip tie ends for a sleeker look.

Depending on your closet space, you can modify this hack by using larger or deeper baskets. Or go smaller with the Rectangular Slotted Plastic Baskets at Dollar Tree. You can pair them with baby hangers from Target (a 10 pack sells for under $2). It's the perfect setup for organizing jewelry or small accessories. Add labels to the fronts of the baskets if desired to help with organization. You can also use this hanging organizer in other closets and storage spaces.
