The Surprising Connection Between DeWalt And Craftsman Tools Explained

When it comes to the most popular power tool brands in the United States, Craftsman and DeWalt are definitely on the list. In fact, both companies are among our best power tool brands ranked. Each brand is known for its reliability and versatile product list, but one thing DIYers across the country might not know is that they are both manufactured by the same parent company. That firm, Stanley Black & Decker, was formed by the 2010 merger of the manufacturer Stanley, founded in 1843, with Black & Decker, which was itself launched in 1910. 

The Stanley Black & Decker company as it is known today is the product of various acquisitions that came before — and after — the 2010 merger. DeWalt has been part of the Black & Decker group for decades, having been acquired in 1960. Craftsman was brought into the fold much later, when the merged tool behemoth acquired it from Sears in 2017. DeWalt and Craftsman are not the only two brands in the overall portfolio, however. Like the parent company name implies, Stanley Black & Decker also owns and operates the brands Stanley and Black & Decker, as well as Bostitch, Lenox, and many more. 

The short answer is no; DeWalt and Craftsman tools are not the same, though there are naturally efficiencies to be found when a corporation runs brands operating in the same category. Both Craftsman and DeWalt have globally integrated manufacturing, allowing for the production of some goods abroad and some parts — as well as the finishing of some products — at home. On each of the brand's websites, the companies note that the products are made in the USA with global materials. 

On the other hand, the brands are marketed distinctly. Craftsman is geared more toward the home DIY enthusiast, while DeWalt is advertised more toward professionals. This audience differential comes through on pricing, as well; for example, a Craftsman cordless 20V drill is less expensive than its DeWalt counterpart. 

Both brands, clearly, create the tools every homeowner should have. As with so many purchases, it's worth doing research to find out which brand — DeWalt, Craftsman, or something else entirely — creates the best product for you and your job, regardless of the corporate owner.
