Everyone's style changes over time, even our favorite HGTV icons. What you may not know about Christina Haack is that her aesthetic has gone through a major revolution since her and Tarek's hit HGTV show, "Flip or Flop." The ex-spouses have recently reunited for their brand-new series, "The Flip Off," which will feature Haack's newly evolved style. From "Christina on the Coast" to "Christina in the Countryside," Haack has been everywhere and renovated every kind of home. Over the years, her taste has been influenced by her wide range of design projects.
When it comes to designing your own home, it's important to be aware of certain elements that can date your space. There's a reason why some trends have fallen to the wayside, and Haack's transformation is proof of the fleeting nature of certain styles. From outdated color palettes to materials that will age your home, sometimes it's important to take a second look at your space. Explore Christina Haack's past design ideas and consider her more modern alternatives.
Plain white kitchen cabinets have been swapped for wood
In Season 7, Episode 5, of "Flip or Flop," Haack described her go-to kitchen remodel plan: "So, white cabinets, white counters. Probably a gray flooring, gray paint." In another episode, she boasted about one of her signature sleek kitchens with bright white cabinetry. She said: "I'm really glad that we went with the lighter, more open vibe in here because it makes it feel a lot bigger. This kitchen is, like, perfectly my style. I love it." This combination of white and cool-toned neutrals popped up consistently throughout her designs, especially in the kitchens. However, Haack wasn't the only fan of this minimalistic look. The clean, crisp look skyrocketed to popularity in defiance of the dark brown Tuscan era of the '90s.
Haack's style has since changed, with many of her recent renovations showcasing kitchens with natural wood grain cabinetry. This is directly reflective of current trends and proof that we are falling back in love with the darker wood of the past. The wood furniture trend is making a big comeback, and this extends to cabinets and finishes. Haack recently posted a peek into her winning kitchen from an episode of "The Flip Off" on Instagram, which included natural wood cabinets and dramatic marble countertops. This combination of natural materials is reflective of the current lean toward rich, organic decor.
Mostly modern spaces now have a vintage touch
Although Haack's style still leans modern, she's getting more and more comfortable with vintage details. In Season 5, Episode 11 of "Flip or Flop," she saw a vintage interior and exclaimed, "We have to update it, do something more modern!" However, viewers clocked her old ways as too contemporary for the architectural style of some homes. User @VioletJoy wrote in the YouTube comments: "They went a little too modern on this house. Parts of it are really nice, but the concrete floor, plain fireplace, and industrial touches feel cold and don't go with the style of the home."
These days, she is peppering character-filled details throughout her homes. Kitchens are one space where her new inclination toward creative interiors is evident. Vintage-style ranges are all the rage, and Haack's Instagram has showcased a few in her designs. If you want to try the look, consider this Unique Appliances Classic Retro Oven. Another traditional material she has been experimenting with is clay tile. Handcrafted tiles can give your kitchen or bathroom a time-honored look. Lastly, reclaimed, thick wood beams have been popping up throughout her featured interiors.
Neutral painted walls are now adorned with wallpaper
Bold, patterned wallpaper definitely wasn't at the forefront of Haack's designs in the past. In Season 5, Episode 7, of "Flip or Flop," her riskiest design choice was an accent wall that was painted a slightly different shade of gray than the rest of the house. She explained her vision: " I was thinking for the majority of the house, we just stick with a light gray paint. But I was thinking for this wall right here, it'd be cool if we did something different. An accent wall. It'd be, like, a warm gray."
Haack isn't the only one who fell victim to all-gray, neutral spaces. In fact, Generation Z has dubbed this dated trend "Millennial Gray," reflecting its popularity among older millennials. There are several affordable ways to freshen up a cold, millennial gray kitchen or bathroom. Haack's latest interiors have seen the introduction of vibrant, daring wall coverings. A recent bathroom remodel on her Instagram featured multi-colored, floral wallpaper. The old Christina wouldn't have dared to branch out with such a quirky approach. Low-profile, sleek surfaces have been exchanged for major texture
Although there's nothing wrong with having a signature style, be careful of competing with the architecture of your home or forcing your aesthetic into a space where it doesn't feel natural. Haack used to fall victim to this common mistake, making every interior modern — even when the space called for a different style. In Season 1, Episode 2, of "Christina on the Coast," the home was described as "boho-chic," but Haack opted for a clean makeover with mostly sleek surfaces and cool neutral tones. Although there was some wood paneling in the child's nursery, the rest of the home appeared to have minimal visual variation. The entire home was craving texture, and only the child's room received an earthy, textural touch.
These days, fluted wood is the new obsession. In fact, it's one of Christina Haack's favorite ways to go bold without using color. She has shared her love of fluted texture on Instagram, using it to cover islands, accent walls, and more. In one recent renovation, she added fluted wood around an oven hood to turn it into a statement piece. However, she still added her signature contemporary touch by choosing a matte black shade. It directly contrasted the vertical tile backsplash with visible grooves. In another renovation, she used fluted wood behind a headboard, on an accent wall behind a desk, and even fluted glass in the shower! You can easily recreate this look anywhere in your home with these Art3D Fluted Wall Panels.
Ivory and beige tile floors have been pushed aside for hardwood
Light, neutral tile floors have been a recurring theme in Haack's flips. In fact, in Season 2, Episode 10, of "Flip or Flop," she and Tarek decided to keep the cream-colored tiles that ran throughout the home. She also chose to use beige, travertine-style tiles in the bathroom. Solid travertine can be a timeless material, but travertine-style tiles have had their day in the sun. If you already have travertine tiles and you can't afford to upgrade your floors, you can add trending shades like denim blues and warm whites to modernize the overall space.
Beige tiles are, unfortunately, reflective of the "sad beige" trend. This refers to the dated trend of covering everything in the home in various beige, neutral tones. However, as the beige-drenched aesthetic has taken a back seat in modern interiors, Haack has moved onto more timeless wood floors. Although wood is still neutral, its rich tones and visual variation make it a more dynamic choice. Plus, wood floors have been in style since the dawn of interior design. If hardwood floors are out of your price range, you can find luxury vinyl flooring with the look of real wood.
White shiplap has been traded for colored shiplap
There are some once-popular design trends that Christina Haack can't get behind, but shiplap is one she has always supported. A longtime fan of shiplap, her minimalistic approach used to involve a low-profile design and white planks. The colorless, flat texture was as daring as she would usually go. However, as with most of her stylistic choices, she has gotten braver with time.
Echoing the way that bold textures have been emerging in her more current work, she recently swapped white shiplap for a colorful alternative. In Season 1, Episode 4, of "Christina in the Country," her dialogue with the clients shows how much her taste has changed. She said: "I kind of feel like when I first came here, I didn't even notice there was shiplap here because your eyes are just kind of drawn to the outside. So, I think it'd be really nice to make it pop with a really pretty color." In the end, she went with blue! This All-in-One Paint in the shade Polo is a similar color.
Understated, neutral exteriors are now more dramatic
An interaction from Season 8, Episode 3, of "Flip or Flop" is proof that Haack's past was filled with a lot of safe, light neutral exteriors. When she suggested painting the exterior in a light gray with a blue door, Tarek responded, "I just hope this pays off. There's a lot of risky things we're doing here with colors." This response just goes to show how conservative the duo usually leaned.
In contrast, Haack put her Tennessee home on the market last year, and it showcased a bold, black exterior. Although her past designs did include pops of darker neutrals, the entirely black exterior is definitely a new direction. Black exteriors steadily rose to popularity throughout recent years, and they are now a prominent contemporary trend. However, if you are worried about black appearing too harsh, you can also get a similar effect with a slate or dark brown exterior. If you decide to do the black house trend, avoid this common mistake.
