Turn Thrifted Wicker Baskets Into Kitchen Countertop Storage With A Clever DIY
Most thrift stores have an abundance of wicker baskets, yet you may stroll past them because you simply don't have a need for them or don't have a vision for a project that uses the woven containers. Wicker baskets are one item Martha Stewart considers essential and can always be found at secondhand stores as well as high-end home shops. But aside from creating stylish storage, what else can you do with them? As it turns out, baskets can be used for a variety of home projects and DIYs, but one clever upcycle is definitely worth your time — you can create tiered countertop storage using a couple wicker baskets and candlestick holders. The results will astound you, as the finished product looks like something straight off of store shelves. From holding fruit and packaged snacks to table decor and even upgraded toiletry storage, this is one thrift flip you need to try.
The scale of this project can vary based on the size of baskets you use. Start by deciding how big you want your tiered piece to be. Keep in mind that the candlestick holders you use need to support the wicker baskets, so finding sturdy materials and small- to medium-sized baskets that won't take up too much surface space will ensure a balanced design. The bottom basket can either be larger than the top or the same size, although a bigger diameter would give a more stylish shape. Make sure the candlesticks are tall enough to leave ample space between the baskets. If it's too short, there won't be a large enough opening for the bottom basket.
Prep your baskets to make a tiered display stand
Don't toss old wicker baskets if you have some lying around — you can recreate this tiered storage display and save a bit of money if you use baskets you already own. Otherwise, visit secondhand shops and antique stores to source some. Your wicker baskets don't have to match, and they can come with handles or without. If they do come with a handle or handles, you can cut these off, which you will definitely want to do for the bottom basket. Use a box cutter or sharp scissors to remove your handles, making sure to trim any excess pieces that may stick out from the edge of the basket. The better shape the baskets come in, the easier this will be, but there are ways to upgrade used wicker and make it like new.
Make sure to clean out and remove all dust and grime, especially if you plan to store food inside of the tiered display. The easiest way to clean your wicker baskets is to dust them with a paintbrush, then use a small amount of mild soap and water to remove tougher stains. If you want an extra protective layer to keep both your wicker and whatever you're storing clean and safe, you can add a layer of plastic inside your baskets, cutting it to fit, and then using a little bit of superglue to stick the plastic to the interior. You can also spray paint the baskets and the candle holders to change the look or create a monochromatic aesthetic. This can help two different baskets look cohesive.
Create two or three tiers for storage
Once you are happy with the wicker condition inside and out, it's time to attach your candlestick holders. Add super glue to the bottom of your candlestick holder, and attach it inside the larger wicker basket or the one you've chosen as the lower tier. Allow this to dry, holding down on the candlestick so that it remains in place and adheres to the wicker. This is another reason when plastic could be useful, as it creates a surface that may be easier to stick the holder to. Once this portion is dry, add glue to the top of your candlestick holder, then place your top tier onto it. Your basket should be right side up.
Hold this in place the same way you did with the first in order to ensure it remains secure. From here if you want to add a third tier you can, it will just depend on how stable your base is. You could find a smaller candlestick holder in a similar material to the lower tier and a tiny basket for your top-tier. You can also add embellishments, like ribbon or fairy lights, to personalize the display. Once dry, place it on your countertops for stylish storage that brings a rustic vibe to any room. Make several of these to pull the theme throughout your whole house and create budget-friendly organizers.
