The Urgent Reason Ridgid Is Recalling One Of Its Popular Tools
An urgent product recall has been issued for two popular brushless nail guns from the brand Ridgid. The recall affects both the 18Volt Brushless 21-Degree Framing Nailer (model number R09894, serial numbers CS21146D220001-CS24165N220001) and the 18Volt Brushless 30-Degree Framing Nailer (model number R09895, serial numbers CS21275D220001-CS24165N220001). If you own either of these framing nailer models, we urge you to check its serial number before using it again.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, this recall affects over 70,000 nailers. The report states, "The dual action engagement system on the nailers can malfunction and involuntarily discharge a nail by pulling the trigger alone, posing a laceration hazard to consumers. The nailer should require both the work piece contact element (nose-piece) to be depressed and the trigger to be pulled at the same time in order to discharge a nail."
Affected customers are advised to contact Ridgid through its dedicated recall page as soon as possible in order to learn how to get their tool repaired for free.
What is a dual action engagement system?
Most power tools have some sort of safety feature built into them to ensure there are no accidental misfires that could cause an injury or damage property. That is precisely what Ridgid's dual action engagement system is for its nail guns. So with it, you would need to press the nose end of the framing nailer against the surface you are working on and then press the trigger in order to release a nail into the wood.
It is a two-step setup, and you would need to do both before a nail comes out. The problem with these recalled products is that this system is not working; nails are being allowed to come out with only the press of the trigger, making it far more likely to cause damage or an injury whether you are working or even trying to clean your power tool.
Ridgid is one of the best power tool brands, known for its decent build quality, lifetime warranties, and reasonable prices. The brand offers a competitive alternative for such tools against the likes of Milwaukee and Ryobi, but specializes in piping and HVAC needs. To reiterate, the recall affects only Ridgid's 18Volt Brushless 21-Degree Framing Nailer and 18Volt Brushless 30-Degree Framing Nailer in the serial number range listed above.
