Say Bye To Harsh Chemicals With DIY Toilet Tablets You Can Easily Make

Let's face it, there's no getting around cleaning the toilet. It's just one of many dirty spots in the house that needs regular attention, so wouldn't it be nice if it was a little less awful of a chore? Toilet tank tablets can help get the job done, but they're also loaded with chemicals and chlorine — and most plumbers frown upon them. Fortunately, there's an easy DIY solution that only requires a few ingredients which you might already have in your cabinet. You can actually make a homemade version of toilet tablets that are natural, inexpensive, and effective. Plus, they're safer to have around kids and pets, too.

Toilets are full of germs, but surprisingly, things like kitchen cutting boards, cell phones, and hand towels often harbor more bacteria — yikes. It doesn't mean you shouldn't be cleaning them often, though. Along with freshening up the seat and bowl, it's also important to clean behind the toilet as well. What's great about DIY toilet tablets is that they're both simple to make and convenient to use. Unlike the traditional kind, you also don't have to worry about the effects of using harsh chemicals. Simply toss one in the bowl and let it get to work.

Here's how to whip up a batch of DIY toilet tabs

To make your own tablets — or "fizzies" as some people call them — you're going to need baking soda, citric acid, Castile soap, and essential oils. You can use ones like lemon, tea tree, lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus, or rosemary — it all depends on your preference of fragrance. In a bowl, blend together 1 cup of baking soda and 1/4 cup of citric acid. Then, add 2 tablespoons of Castile soap and stir. Mix in approximately 25 drops of essential oil. Scoop the mixture into a mold tray, and pack each section down so that it's compressed. Let the tablets dry for around 24 hours, then transfer them to an airtight jar.

When you're ready to use the toilet tabs, drop one inside the bowl and it'll start to fizz. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes, as it does its job of loosening grime, fighting bacteria, and freshening up the bowl. Then, give the bowl a scrub with your toilet brush. It's a great hack if you're looking to make cleaning the bathroom a little easier, all while avoiding chemicals and saving money. You can even make your fizzies fun by using a mold that has heart or star shapes, or adding in a couple of drops of food coloring. Or, switch up the scents of your tablets and try different fragrance combos like lemon and tea tree, peppermint and lavender, or sweet orange and rosemary.
