Long, loose cables and cords are a tripping hazard, and they can also make a room look unkempt. Today, most of us live with many electronics meant to make our daily lives easier. However, this doesn't mean that the areas in your home where your devices are charged have to constantly look like a tangled electronic mess that's just one coffee spill away from disaster. There are many ways to tackle this issue. Apart from a budget-friendly Dollar Tree hack that'll tidy up clutter around your home, there's another simple DIY using Dollar Tree items that can help you wrangle in those unruly cords and cables.

That's right, a simple Dollar Tree wire shower caddy, which costs only $1.50, may be just what you need to get rid of the chaotic electrical cord scene in your home. With this affordable caddy, you can make inroads towards decluttering your home with a neat, stylish DIY charging station that looks intentional. In addition to the caddy, you'll need a bag of zip ties, a power drill (like this one from Deko Pro for $35.99), some screws, and a pair of mini bolt cutters, similar to these from Workpro for $11.99.

How to make a DIY charging station with a shower caddy

Once you have your caddy, remove the top hanging section with your wire cutters, snipping it right at the top of the first horizontal wire. Do this on both sides. Then, lay your electrical power strip down horizontally on the bottom row of the caddy. Now you're going to create two zip tie holders to keep the strip secure. To do this, you may need to interlock three zip ties (depending on their lengths) to fit them around the strip.

Secure the strip at both ends with the zip holders. Now it's time to secure the caddy to the wall. First, measure the wall where the caddy will be placed. Note that the caddy measures close to 9 inches wide and about 8 to 9 inches tall, after removing the top portion — so be sure there's enough space for it on the wall.

Next, mark two pilot hole locations using a ruler, drill your screws into the wall, and hang your caddy on them. If needed, add a third screw right above the middle of the caddy to get rid of any wobbliness. When plugging in your devices, be sure to thread the cords in between the bottom and top wires on the caddy to prevent tangling.

Blending the charging station in with your decor

Add a stylish accent to your new charging station by throwing on a splash of paint, matching it to your room's decor. For darker rooms or areas, try spraying the station with matte black or gray to help it blend into the background. Or, give it an elegant flair by using metallic gold or silver paint.

You can also mount the charging station inside an empty picture frame on the wall or on a chalkboard to help it stand out more. Consider combining it with a Delamu cord hider to keep the area more organized and to add a bit of discretion. Have a room with a lot of electronics? No problem. Areas such as game rooms, movie theaters, and garages can easily become cluttered with various electrical cords.

In such cases, you can purchase a handful of shower caddies and line them up side by side to create a docking station row. Just be sure to space them apart adequately to allow room for the edges of the power strips, as they may be longer than the caddies. Also, don't forget those hooks on the bottom of the charging station — they're perfect for keeping a few small items within reach, such as keychains, smartwatches, or headphones.
