"One person's trash is another person's treasure" — it's a saying that can be taken literally when it comes to salvaging and repurposing items that you no longer have the space or use for. For those with a basic set of tools and a creative mind, almost anything can be turned into something useful or artistic. A dilapidated and dysfunctional piece of furniture can be scrapped and used for new home decor pieces to decorate a space. Outdated and unwanted paintings can be DIYed to create new decor pieces that can be hung in their places. With a little bit of imagination (and maybe a few art supplies), a new home decor piece can be made out of essentially anything. Take a simple wood plank, for instance. Following the lead of Instagrammer and DIYer Drew Michael Scott, you can transform an ordinary piece of wood into unique decor to beautify your home.
Finding your ideal home decor can cost a lot of money, especially if you want unique, one-of-a-kind items. This is why some homeowners turn to more budget-friendly options like DIYing wall art that looks high-end or creating stunning wall art using old toilet paper rolls among other everyday, overlooked household items. For this DIY, all you'll need to produce a visually aesthetic, textured, and unique piece of decor is a plank of wood, several wooden half spheres, wood stain, and wood glue. The size you want your decor to be will determine how big of a plank and the amount of wooden half spheres you'll need to buy, but you can start with a 16-pack of 2-inch Juvale Unfinished Split Wooden Balls from Amazon for $8 and some change.
Transform a piece of wood into unique decor
This DIY is inspired by Brutalist design, which uses exaggeration and distortion for added effect. Placing your plywood flat on a work surface, arrange the wooden half spheres in neat rows along the plywood. You can adjust the design to fit your artistic vision. That might include cutting the plywood base into a unique shape or arranging the half spheres in a pattern other than evenly spaced rows. Once the pieces are arranged, secure the spheres onto the surface with wood glue, being careful not to use too much. Gorilla Ultimate Waterproof Wood Glue will work well. You can also create a frame around the edge of the plywood using additional pieces of wood.
After the half spheres are secured and the glue is sufficiently dried, apply two coats of stain in your preferred color over both the spheres and plywood base for even coverage. After applying each coat, wipe the excess stain off of the wood, and let it dry before applying the next coat. You can apply more coats or apply different finish techniques to customize the artwork.
If a wood stain is too mundane for your tastes, try painting your original art piece with different colors and types of paints. You can further customize your work by painting the spheres in different hues for a more playful look. If the circular design is not your preferred motif, try using other shapes, like these Crafter's Square Craft Cubes or wooden triangles, to add different textures and designs to your plywood base. As soon as the stain dries, you can hang your new, distinct decor piece on your wall of choice or prop it against a dresser or cabinet to add a unique touch to any space.
