Nate Berkus is one of the stars of the celebrity interior design industry for good reason. He helps create homes that feel both inviting and sophisticated, letting people's individual tastes and personalities shine through the space. The designer has worked across the country and picked up inspiration everywhere from classic architecture to his personal travels, but there's one undercurrent that unites all his work — organization. Berkus frequently shares habits that will keep your place tidy and organized, understanding that a decluttered home is a happy one.

There's one tip, in particular, from the design and organizing guru that can be a game-changer for perfect drawer organization. Berkus shared via Instagram how creating labels for your drawers can lead to smarter, tidier living spaces. By placing the label on the inner lip of the drawer rather than on the outside, you'll be able to quickly find what you're looking for while maintaining the design integrity of your space. Plus, the labels are easy to remove, without leaving any residue on the outside, if you rearrange your drawers.

Using labels for inner lips of drawers

In his post about the organizational tip, Berkus noted that his original inspiration for it came as he was unpacking during a move he made with husband Jeremiah Brent to a stunning new home. While Brent worked on figuring out where the furniture should go, Berkus holed up in the closet, figuring out genius ways to use his label maker — and you can copy his idea in your own closet, dresser, or other storage areas.

He used a transparent option to create subtle-looking labels that fit on the inner lip of the drawer, but you can create labels in any color and style to fit your personality. Regardless of what the label looks like, it allows you to see what's inside the drawer upon opening it just a hair, allowing you to quickly know the drawer's contents. It's a helpful hack that saves time in any room of the house, making it easy to find the place you're looking for, whether you're putting away laundry, frantically searching for the right apparel, or trying to remember which kitchen drawer holds the meat grinder.

Of course, you don't have to wait until a big move to implement the organizational hack. You can start with a label maker like the Nelko Bluetooth Label Printer. Then, take a page from Berkus's book and get as specific as possible with your labels. Instead of just "socks," for example, Berkus printed separate labels for different styles, like ankle, athletic, and dress. (If you don't have as many separate drawers as he does, you can use DIY drawer dividers to give each style their spot.) Then, press the label on the lip of the drawer. In this way, your drawers — and your mind — can stay clutter and stress-free.
