One designer made it clear to The Spruce that she thinks using wire shelving makes the space feel unfinished, the idea being that you started planning out your space with wire shelves and then never switched them out. That same designer pointed out that using this type of storage will "instantly downgrade the room."

A practical issue with the use of wire shelving is that it's not as supportive and stable for smaller items. Considering the wire leaves things open to falling through, depending on its spacing, it can actually lead to more of a mess than what you originally had. It can be a struggle to store small spice jars, bottles, and packets on these shelves. Plus, these types of shelves can bend and break under heavy weight while also being hard to clean if they get dusty or greasy.

Although wire shelving might be more affordable in the short term, if you have to replace it because it breaks under the weight of your dishes, cookbooks, or pantry staples, then it really doesn't make sense in your space. If you're looking for storage that is more durable and looks good, you might want to consider more classic shelves and pieces. Either MDF or wood are great choices, as they are more durable and won't lead to things falling through the cracks. These materials are also easier to clean compared to wire shelves, and they will still look good over time, even with regular use. Plus, similar to the wire shelving, MDF is an affordable shelving option.

Beyond building your own shelving, there are also prebuilt units to choose from that can make a difference. One option is to invest in a solid new piece for the kitchen that looks good and works well for storing all of the things you reach for regularly. Even older storage options for the kitchen, such as a hutch or a china cabinet, can make a difference when it comes to getting organized without the use of wire shelves. You may want to bring in a classic kitchen pantry if you need more storage, one that looks elevated and also keeps things stored behind closed doors.
