The Vintage-Inspired Wall Design That HGTV's Erin Napier Loves
HGTV's Erin Napier design choices prove that she understands how to blend the old with the new. As part of her design aesthetic, she has repeatedly showcased how people can incorporate modern function with vintage charm. In the third season of "Home Town Takeover," she showcased a vintage-inspired plate wall in the dining room of her client's home that had a lot of people talking.
In clips posted to Instagram from the season premiere, viewers not only got to see Napier picking out the plates for the design, but also the end product, which featured some vintage artwork positioned amongst the plates. While the designer picked out the plates for this design herself, she hopes that over the years the homeowners add new plates to the design to keep things fresh, while showing off memories.
Napier shared in the episode that she feels a plate wall makes a space feel like a home. Depending on the plates used, it can also add a lot of color to a room. For the wall showcased in the episode, she found pieces that represented specific towns to add a more personal touch, which is something anyone can do.
How to create your own plate wall
Erin Napier is not the only designer who is incorporating plate walls in her designs. For some designers, they are even pulling the plates out of the kitchen and dining room, and incorporating this look in other rooms to keep things unexpected. This can be an inexpensive wall design choice that can make a big difference in any room. The important thing to consider when doing this is that you're being both personal and intentional with your choices. Much like Napier did, pick plates that are meaningful to you, represent places you've been, or that add a pop of color.
You can mix and match plates to add visual interest, but you still want to consider how things will work together on your wall. Organize your plates in unique patterns, but try not to add them to a wall that already has other eye-catching features.
Another thing to consider is placing your plates on walls featuring beautiful wallpaper. Napier was able to make her vintage-inspired wall look fresh with floral wallpaper that was a blend of sharpness and soft edges. She planned out the layout in a way that let the plates, artwork, and wallpaper work together. Like with any gallery wall, planning your layout before hanging your plates will save time (and save your walls from unnecessary holes). Fortunately, these pieces are easy to change out once you've decided to try something new.
