Birds love water fountains for several reasons, including cooling themselves down, socializing, and preening their feathers. Having a bird bath in your yard or garden creates an entertaining spot to watch and enjoy the many types of birds that it attracts, visiting for a drink or a swim. If you've always wanted to incorporate a water fountain but didn't have the budget, then look no further. You can create a simple and easy DIY water feature in your yard to attract more birds, consisting of just five things: a garden pot, a plastic basket, a large flat rock, tubing, and a water pump.
There are numerous ways you can create a water fountain in your garden or yard. Water fountains can be preferred over baths by birds (here's why putting a bird bath in your yard may not be the best idea), primarily due to the moving water, which makes it easier for them to see from a distance. It also provides a nice protection from mosquitoes that prefer to congregate in stagnant water. For this DIY floating rock fountain, you'll need to purchase or locate a few necessities. A flat rock is preferred for the water to bubble up over the top, and you'll need a water pump for the fountain, like this Simple Deluxe Submersible Pump. You'll also need a deep garden pot or ceramic bowl, as well as a basket for the rock to sit on top of, such as the TotalPond Aquatic Plant Basket.
How to build your own magical floating rock fountain
Create this DIY fountain by first placing the pump at the bottom of your large pot or bowl. Ensure that the base doesn't have any holes in it. Then, take your basket and place it in the bowl upside down so it fits snugly and evenly over the pump. Next, cut a hole in the bottom of your basket for the pump's plug. Drill a hole twice through the rock, first with a smaller bit drill to make it easier for the larger hole to fit your tube. Your rock should not extend beyond the sides of your pot (otherwise, the water would fall out), but it should cover the pond basket. Ensure it has a shallow dip in the middle, since birds enjoy bathing in water 1 to 2 inches deep.
Drill the same width hole on the top of your basket, and place the rock on top. Once you've lined them up, thread your tube through the basket and the rock. You may need to attach a piece of small fountain hose on the pump to go all the way up to the rock. Add in the water, and then you can plug in and turn on the pump. You'll have a beautiful and aesthetically pleasing floating rock fountain for birds to come and enjoy! Finally, if you want to do a little more with it, you can decorate your water fountain to create a modern design bird bath, or incorporate specific colors to attract the birds you wish to see.
