The Vintage-Style Bed Frame Nate Berkus Suggests For A Cozy Bedroom

If there's one room in your home that should feel warm and inviting, it's your bedroom. Beyond being a place to sleep, your bedroom is a wonderful spot to unwind after a long day — whether it's curling up with a good book or settling in to binge a favorite Netflix series. If you're looking to boost the coziness factor of your sleep space, consider starting with the focal point: your bed. According to HGTV's Nate Berkus, adding a vintage-inspired bed frame is a simple yet effective way to make your bedroom feel more intimate and comfortable.

Berkus said in a YouTube video for Architectural Digest that when it comes to making a bedroom feel cozier, "I'm really into four-poster beds, iron beds, bed hangings." Canopy beds — which have four posts connected by a frame from which drapery can be hung — also fall into this category. "If you look at traditional historic design, people had sort of drapery around their beds," he says. There are many gorgeous ways to style a canopy bed from hanging linen or sheer fabrics to create a light, airy effect, to using heavier materials such as velvet or silk for a more luxurious, cocoon-like feel. If you like the idea of including a vintage bed frame but don't want to break the bank, the good news is these are one of the best kinds of furniture to thrift as you can often find unique vintage beds that are well-crafted.

Include a vintage bed frame or tall, upholstered headboard

Another type of bed frame Berkus says will make a bedroom feel more cozy is a tall, upholstered headboard. "I think a higher upholstered headboard is also a really good option. It gives you the height, allows you to have some pattern and texture and really kind of makes the bed feel a bit more intimate," he says in the YouTube video. There are many options when it comes to upholstered headboards depending on your style. For a dramatic, luxurious look, a tufted velvet headboard in a bold color is a great way to make the room feel more intimate. You could also go with real or faux leather if you want something durable that gives off a more rustic, lived-in feel.

To make the bed frame even more of a statement piece, you could choose a bold fabric for the headboard or bed hangings. Florals can add color and make the room feel more traditional, while stripes create a more tailored look that works particularly well with coastal decor. You could go with gingham or plaid to achieve a farmhouse look, or even geometric shapes for a more modern space. If you find a headboard you love but aren't a fan of the fabric, don't worry — it's one of the easiest things to change. In fact, if you're looking for a great budget-friendly way to update your bed you could even upholster a bed frame with your favorite tablecloth using a simple DIY .
