Dishwasher Pods, Liquid, Or Powder Detergent: Which Is Best For Cleaning Dishes?

There is no denying dishwasher pods have become a go-to choice for many people, thanks to their easy, mess-free convenience. But do they actually clean better than traditional liquid or powder detergents? The answer is generally yes. Though while pods offer a simple way to make washing your dishes easier, there are some other factors that are worth considering.

Compared to liquid dish detergents, pods do a better job of cleaning dishes, according to tests conducted by Consumer Reports. Pods were not only more effective at cleaning, but also less likely to leave behind a cloudy film. Because pods contain a precise amount of detergent, it prevents overuse, which can cause filming on dishes. So if you're looking for ways to get your dishwasher to stop leaving a white residue on your dishes, while getting them extra clean, pods are a better choice than liquid detergent. That said, while having a pre-measured amount of detergent is generally a good thing, it does mean you can't adjust the amount you're using, which could be problematic if you're running a shorter wash cycle, in which case the pod may not fully dissolve.  

Liquid detergents are often less effective compared to both pods and powders. This is because of the chemistry involved in mixing bleach and enzymes — key ingredients that are essential for an effective dish cleaning solution. When mixed with bleach in liquid form, enzymes break down, making them less potent. This does not happen, however, with powder detergents in which the enzymes remain more stable. 

Since most pods contain powder, they tend to be as effective as powdered soap — and in many cases even more so. Because some pods include a liquid component in addition to the powder, it could make them even more powerful at tackling tough dish grime. If your dishes come out spotty or aren't getting as clean as you'd like, switching to pods may be a good first step. While pods may be the better overall option for cleaning your dishes, the large plastic tubs they come in aren't the most environmentally friendly. If eco-friendliness is a priority, you may want to consider going with powder detergent, as the cardboard boxes it comes in are easier to recycle.
