One way to be more eco-friendly is by upcycling items that would otherwise end up in the trash once you've finished using them. Think coffee cans repurposed for craft supplies or glass jars turned into unique home decor. Today, we're sharing a clever idea for upcycling a tissue box — yes, that simple cardboard container you probably wouldn't imagine has any other purpose once the tissues are gone. But surprisingly, it does. With an empty rectangular tissue box and a few cuts from an X-Acto knife, you can keep bathroom clutter at bay by turning it into a handy storage container for bathroom essentials.
Not only can this repurposed tissue box hack be used to stack feminine products, but it also works perfectly for storing cotton balls, Q-tips, or even hair accessories that always end up scattered around the bathroom. YouTuber Minimalist Paik shared how she upcycled a tissue box to neatly stack and store feminine supplies, which are typically sold in plastic bags that cannot be reused and tend to look messy under the sink. With this method, your bathroom essentials can be tucked away and organized in the cabinet so they're easy to grab.
Upcycling a tissue box for bathroom storage
To upcycle your tissue box into handy bathroom storage, you'll need an X-Acto knife and a ruler for straight lines. Start by placing the box upright onto its square side, then cut the top square off the other side. Next, cut out the middle section, leaving about an inch around the edges so the lip can hold items inside. Once finished, the rectangular box will sit on the square that remains intact. The two long rectangular panels will be the front facing display, while the top remains open. There will be an opening in front that makes it easy to reach the products inside.
Because tissue boxes are flimsy and not usually decorative, there are ways to add a creative touch to this hack. You can wrap it with contact paper, either side-by-side or by unfolding the box, covering it, trimming it to fit, and gluing the sides back together. Painting is another option (just make sure the paint is suitable for cardboard). If the box is plain, you can also decoupage decorative napkins onto the sides and seal them with Mod Podge. Washi tape and jute rope are other fun materials that could add character, so the box looks like bathroom storage rather than just a reused tissue box. And if the box is too large, cut it in half and use it to store smaller products like jewelry, makeup, or other items that tend to scatter around the bathroom.
