Gorgeous Sage Varieties To Plant In September To Attract Hummingbirds

From the buzz of their tiny wings to their vibrant, colorful feathers — spotting a little hummingbird outside is always a joy. If you can't get enough of these special birds, there are all kinds of smart ways to draw more hummingbirds to your yard or garden. Flowering plants, including certain varieties of sage (Salvia officinalis), are an obvious attractant. Although not all types of sage can be planted this late in the season, some hummingbird favorites, including pineapple sage (Salvia elegans) and Mexican sage (Salvia leucantha), are perfect for September gardening.

Many types of sage produce tube-shaped flowers that make it easy for hummingbirds to get to the delicious nectar. And hummingbirds are one of the main pollinators of sage plants, so the benefits go both ways. If you're ready to turn your yard or garden into a pollination station, it might be time to pick up some beautiful sage plants at your local garden center or plant nursery.

Pineapple sage, Mexican sage, and more can be planted in September

Lining your yard with sage and other bird-friendly plants is one of the best ways to get more hummingbirds to nest in your yard. With sage specifically, there are quite a few varieties to choose from that are sure to please your local hummingbirds. Pineapple sage is best suited for USDA hardiness zones 8 to 11, but in cooler climates, you can plant it as an annual. The plant produces vibrant red flowers that bloom from late summer to fall, which can keep hummingbirds coming to your yard. It's those bright blossoms that attract hummingbirds to pineapple sage.

Mexican sage produces deep purple and white blossoms that also bloom through late summer and fall. Mexican sage, sometimes called Mexican bush sage, is a perennial well suited for hardiness zones 8 through 10. Like pineapple sage, Mexican sage can also be planted as an annual in colder climates.

Another option for attracting hummingbirds in September is autumn sage (Salvia greggii). The small, herbaceous shrub produces tubular red flowers that bloom in both spring and fall. Autumn sage is native to Texas and is suitable for hardiness zones 6 through 9. 'Raspberry Delight,' a sage hybrid, will also attract hummingbirds and can be planted in September for fall enjoyment. Whichever variety you choose to plant, hummingbird sage makes a perfect ground cover and pollinator magnet.
