How To Plant & Grow Turmeric Indoors

While many people turn to herbs like basil and mint, some root vegetables, like turmeric, can also be grown indoors with a bit of care. This golden spice is a kitchen staple, known for its peppery flavor and vibrant color. Choosing your rhizome and preparing the soil
You can begin your turmeric growing journey by choosing the right rhizome to plant. You can find fresh, organic turmeric at a local grocery store or farmer's market. Look for a root that is firm and plump, with small nodes, or "eyes" that are just beginning to show a bit of green. These are the spots where the new shoots will grow. To prepare them for planting, you can cut the rhizome into 1- to 2-inch pieces, but make sure that each section has at least a couple of eyes. Letting these pieces sit out for a day or two will help them develop a protective callus over the cut ends, which reduces the chance of rot once you put them in soil.
The container you choose is also important. Turmeric rhizomes spread horizontally, so a wide, shallow pot is better than a deep, narrow one. Choose a container that is at least 12 inches deep and wide enough to contain a plant that may grow up to 2 feet across. It also needs good drainage holes. Turmeric plants grow best in slightly acidic to neutral soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. The soil should be loose and loamy, rich in organic matter, and well-draining to prevent the roots from sitting in water, which can lead to root rot. Blending a high-quality potting mix with compost, peat moss, or coco coir can create the perfect growing environment.
Planting and nurturing turmeric rhizomes
Once you have prepared your rhizomes and the pot, you can begin the planting process. Plant each rhizome segment 2 to 3 inches deep and about 6 inches apart, with the eyes pointing upward. After planting, water the soil thoroughly. Turmeric thrives in consistently moist soil, but it should never be waterlogged. Overwatering is one of the quickest ways to kill the plant, so it's important to let the top inch of soil dry out slightly between waterings.
Place the container in a warm spot that receives at least six hours of bright, indirect light daily. If you're trying to grow the turmeric in a cooler climate, you can use a heat mat to keep the soil temperature consistently warm, which will encourage the rhizomes to sprout. It can take several weeks for the first green shoots to pop through the soil, so patience is key during this time. Once the plant begins to grow, fertilize it every few weeks with a balanced liquid fertilizer to support growth. Once established, turmeric is a fairly low-maintenance plant, so you can enjoy watching it grow as you wait for harvest time.
