DIY A Modern Style Chrome Shelf People Will Swear Is Designer

Home decor trends come and go, and ultimately they're just for fun. How you choose to style your house should be based solely on personal taste. So, if you've been dreaming about adding chrome accents to your home but are worried about chrome home decor going out of style, this DIY shelf by Instagram user @allthepeachesplease is sure to put your worries at bay. Constructed from a sheet of chrome stainless steel, this simple shelf is reminiscent of the designer Wavy Shelf by Haus of Hart, but for a fraction of the price.

For this project, you will need one sheet of stainless steel. The DIYer uses a roughly 10-foot sheet, but you can make a smaller shelf if you like. You will also need a long acrylic dowel, two stoppers, a drill, and hardware to mount the shelf to the wall. If you're looking to DIY stunning floating shelves that are strong enough to hold kitchen supplies, this might not be the right project. However, if you want something unique, modern, and designer-worthy, this chrome shelf is sure to satisfy.

How to assemble a DIY wavy chrome shelf

To construct the shelf, start by drilling evenly spaced holes through your chrome sheet. Each set of two holes will form one level on your shelf, so keep that in mind when choosing how many holes to drill. Next, bend the chrome into a wavy pattern and slide the acrylic dowel through each of the holes you just drilled. Once you're happy with the shape, add a rubber stopper to each end of your rod to keep everything in place.

Now it's time to mount the shelf onto your wall. The easiest way to do this will be to find the wall stud and drill screws through the concave parts of your shelf that touch the wall, anchoring them to the stud. When the shelf is securely mounted, all that's left to do is decorate.

While decorating, there are some common shelf styling mistakes you'll want to avoid for a more polished look. Also keep weight limitations in mind. While stylish, there are some concerns about how sturdy this DIY shelf will be, so it's best to land on the side of caution. As a reference point, the Haus of Hart aluminum shelf has a maximum weight limit of roughly 10 pounds with proper wall mounting. Another concern to keep in mind are the edges of your DIY shelf. If they feel too sharp you can gently sand or grind the edges to give them a smoother finish.
