The Clever Way To Fake An Upscale Cement Planter Using An Old Coffee Can
Incorporating trendy natural materials into your home can definitely make it feel more luxurious. Stone, cement, wood, and metal are among those materials. You can do this in lots of ways — for example, through your choice of furniture and accessories. Investing in a more permanent change such as a cement floor or worktop can be extremely costly, but you can still incorporate the look of cement and create the same industrial feel for a fraction of the price by upcycling things you already have to create home decor.
You can easily make your own faux cement planter by repurposing an empty coffee can. A real cement planter can be quite expensive and can cost anywhere between $20 to over $100. However, if you make your own it will cost you a lot less and will also stop your used coffee canisters ending up in a landfill. But, what are you going to need to create your very own chic cement planter? All you will require are a tub of tile adhesive and a spatula to cover the can for a faux cement look. A spatula that is used to decorate cakes, like the New Star Foodservice Angled Icing Spatula, would be ideal.
How to make your own cement looking planter
First things first, you'll want to take any labels off your coffee canister, so you are left with a plain tin can. To remove the labels without leaving any sticky residue, we would recommend filling the coffee can with really hot water, leaving it for a few hours to work its magic, and then you should be able to easily peel off the label. Next, take your spatula and apply a thick layer of tile adhesive. There's no doubt that this will take some trial and error for you to get the right technique, but keep gradually adding your tile adhesive and spreading it with your spatula, just like you would when icing a cake. When you are happy with the finish, leave to fully dry for around 24-48 hours and give it a light sand before using it as a planter.

If you don't have any tile adhesive, but happen to have some grout and sand lying around, you can create a similar cement effect by mixing the two together with water. Pour a generous amount of grout and sand into a bucket and gradually add water until you're happy with the consistency — it should be thick but not so thick that you can't spread it onto your planter. When finished, add your plant into your planter and proudly put it out on display.
