HGTV's Erin Napier Reveals Two Perfect Neutral Paint Colors For Kitchen Cabinets
Erin Napier, who renovates homes alongside husband Ben for HGTV's "Home Town Takeover," has made a few controversial design decisions — like that "huge" dancing woman painting that some viewers felt didn't quite fit, or the first time Erin tried putting a stove in front of the kitchen window. Still, she has an eye for decor, and is often ahead of the home design curve, especially when it comes to kitchen cabinet colors. For example, one of Erin's most controversial paint choices, a bold dark burgundy, is now dominating today's kitchen cabinet trends. But not all of her style picks are contentious. On Season 3 of "Home Town Takeover," which aired in the spring of 2025, Erin revealed two neutral paint colors that worked perfectly for kitchen cabinets in a Florida home renovation — and they would probably look great on your kitchen cabinets, too!
The colors — Cuddle Down and Du Jour, both by Valspar Paint, are soft, simple cream hues that Erin described on her Instagram as feeling "both warm and welcoming," especially when accented with brass hardware. While both paint colors fall in the same hue family (white), Cuddle Down has cool undertones, and Du Jour is ever-so-slightly darker with warm undertones. And the great part is that both colors are incredibly easy to incorporate anywhere in your home — not just on your kitchen cabinet — and come with a host of design benefits, too.
The benefits of using Valspar's Cuddle Down and Du Jour in your home
The old adage that neutral colors need to be the default for small spaces is just one of the pieces of design advice that Erin Napier says you should ditch. But simple off-white neutrals like Cuddle Down and Du Jour are a home design staple for a reason. These kitchen cabinet colors make excellent choices, especially for small or dark spaces, because white and off-white shades generally help spaces feel bigger and reflect both natural and artificial light. And off-white shades have an edge over straight-up white paint because they're better at camouflaging mess and imperfections. Plus, they're versatile and go with anything. You want to show off those quirky, colorful dish towels or that pottery with crazy geometric prints that you found at the flea market? No problem. Cabinets painted in off-white won't clash with other accessories because they make a great blank canvas for pops of color.
And guess what? These neutral cabinet colors don't need to be restricted to your kitchen. In fact, using the same color in other spaces throughout your home is an easy way to seamlessly tie all the rooms in the house together. Try painting bathroom cabinets in Du Jour as well; or lighten up dark corners of your home and make tiny spaces feel bigger by using Cuddle Down on walls or crown moldings. It's less harsh than blindingly-white paint, so you can brighten rooms with a color that's still airy, yet soft and elegant.
