Every homeowner usually has at least a couple of screwdrivers, and contractors can end up with a bunch of them. DeWalt's latest cordless electric screwdriver has two key advantages: First, it's powered so you can work fast and without wrist ache even when driving screws all day. Second, it comes with 13 bits for different fasteners, so you have fewer tools to carry around. Let's take a closer look at why users are absolutely loving this gadget.

It's always nice to have tools you can depend on, and DeWalt is recognized as the most reliable power tool brand, according to reviews. Their cordless screwdriver has a number of valuable features. A chuck holds the bits firmly in place, there's a useful LED work light, and an integral battery charged via USB cable. It can also fasten up to 680 screws per charge. Key to its usability are the variable torque settings and the Flexdrive control that lets you operate the screwdriver in any position without struggling to reach a button. The torque rating (twisting force) is 44 inch pounds (in-lbs.) or 124 in-lbs. in manual mode.

At Amazon, over 9,000 customers gave the DeWalt Cordless Screwdriver an average of 4.5 stars. Comments like "compact, lightweight, and surprisingly powerful" are typical. Owners love its versatility. In one leading review of professional power tools, it took top spot for best inline screwdriver. Another for DIY tools ranked it first overall. It impresses pretty much everybody.

Why DeWalt's electric screwdriver may not be for you

The previous model of the DeWalt cordless electric screwdriver made our own list of best DeWalt tools under $100. The new model is both more powerful and more flexible, yet it won't be for everybody. One hurdle will be the cost. The DeWalt Cordless Screwdriver is currently $75.74 at Amazon. You can get similar tools, with larger accessory kits, for less than half the price. Okay, they may not have DeWalt's build quality and durability, and that might be important for contractors, but many homeowners could find it difficult to justify paying more for a screwdriver than they might for a drill/driver.

There's also an issue with the integral battery. Life expectancy is not given, and it may be several years, but performance will eventually degrade. When it does, this type of battery is difficult, if not impossible, to replace. Although they don't confirm this, DeWalt does not offer spares. The only option then is to buy a complete new tool. Although this is true of most power tools with integral batteries, often their low cost compensates. However, the DeWalt cordless electric screwdriver is not exactly cheap.

It is a tremendous tool, and it is very popular. For professionals who deal with dozens of fasteners every day, it could well be a game-changer. However, the high price means that whether it will make those lists of tools every homeowner should have is open to question.
