Upcycle Old Doors Into A Stylish Storage Solution For Your Mugs
Having everything tucked away and out of sight is probably an unrealistic expectation for a kitchen, especially when it's on the smaller side. Everyday items that we end up building a collection of, like mugs, can end up looking cluttered on a countertop, as we often run out of cabinet space to store them. If you're a keen coffee or tea drinker, then you may want to look into creating your very own at-home coffee bar. Part of this would be thinking of an innovative way to organize your overflowing mug collection, and we've got an affordable upcycling DIY that will help kick-start your project.
This DIY involves taking a wooden panel from an old door and transforming it into a handy wall shelf to hang all of your coffee mugs. What you'll need to complete this DIY is: an old wooden panel from either a door, a fence, or something similar; a handsaw, wood glue, screws, a screwdriver, and a handful of hooks.
How to complete this mug-storage DIY
Take your wooden panel and cut it to size with a handsaw, so it fits perfectly where you want your at-home coffee station to be. Wherever you sourced your wooden panel, it probably needs a good wash to remove any dirt or dust. A lovely idea to pay homage to its original purpose is to glue the door knobs back onto the wooden panel. This adds character, but also offers somewhere to hang bigger items, like tea towels. Attach your wooden panel to the wall using screws and a screwdriver. Then, finally, screw in your hooks that will be used to hang your mugs. Top tip: be mindful when spacing out your hooks so that your mugs will have enough room to hang properly.
If your wooden panel needs a bit more TLC and could benefit from a lick of paint, then this is a great way of customizing it to suit your kitchen. You'll probably want to give your panel a light sanding first with some sandpaper to smooth out any rough edges. Then, take your chosen paint color, ensuring that it is suitable for painting wood, apply two coats for an even finish, and seal it with a clear varnish to protect it from any potential coffee stains.
