Turn Dollar Tree Items Into Unique Halloween Candle Holders With A Super Simple DIY
Halloween legend tells us that people used to put jack-o'-lanterns in the window to frighten away a character named Stingy Jack, who wandered the Earth, carrying a turnip lit by an ember from the hot place beneath the world's crust. Over the course of time, people have forgotten the creepy origins of the jack-o'-lantern. These days, cute pumpkin-faced candle displays, including ones made from Dollar Tree stuff, light up our walkways on Halloween. And while the candleholder you're about to make is much cuter and more friendly than the ones used to frighten Jack away, it still has enough of a creep factor to make it worthy of Halloween legend.
With this Halloween-inspired decor, you give your jack-o'-lantern a modern spin by swapping out the turnips and pumpkins with two of Dollar Tree's Halloween Pumpkin Glass Tealight Candle Holders. A pair of DT's Black Metal Pedestal Candle Holders takes this display from a couple of Halloween-themed jars to glass pumpkins on a pedestal — all the better to scare Jack away with.
The addition of the black pedestals elevates this craft — literally and figuratively. And because every spooky pumpkin face could use a few creepy crawly companions, you'll also need one or two packages of Halloween Glitter Spider Decorations and some LED pillar candles, too. Some assembly will be required, of course, to put this candelabra together. To that end, you'll need a glue gun. Part of the process also requires you to deconstruct some of the elements of this project, so you should also have a pair of needle-nosed pliers on hand.
Building Dollar Tree pedestal Jack-o'-lantern candles
The deconstruction of part of this craft should come first. This involves you using a pair of WORKPRO 6-inch Needle Nose Pliers to remove the metal handle of the glass pumpkin jars. Once that's done, wipe the jar down inside and out to ensure that no dust or packing materials have come along for the ride, then set the jar aside.
Next, you'll turn the candles into a DIY Halloween display by gluing a couple of the plastic spiders onto each of the metal candleholders. Put one on the base and two on the metal bars (one spider on each bar). Or if you'd like to create visual interest, put three spiders on one metal candleholder and four on the other. Doing this taps into a rule that many interior designers swear by. That is, making displays that feature an odd instead of an even number.
Follow this step by gluing the glass pumpkin jars onto the tops of the metal pedestals, then place one of the Luminessence LED Votive Candles from DT into each jar. Finally, you can shake things up a bit by adding a spider to the side of at least one of the pumpkin jars to make it look like the spider is climbing into the jack-o'-lantern. If you're employing the odd-number interior design rule in your display, make the spider on the glass pumpkin's face the fourth spider out of the seven arachnids in the overall display.
Ideas for leveling up the display
There are ways to create additional visual interest in this Halloween display. One simple way to do it is to dress the metal pedestal with pieces of faux spider webbing that you've pulled off the ZPISF Super Stretch Cobwebs. Hang this on the black candleholders before adding on the spiders. You can also make a bed of cobwebs for the candleholders to sit on. For an extra spooky effect, position some loose plastic spiders in the bed of webs, too.
Playing with different shapes and heights is another way to make the jack-o'-lantern arrangement more fun to look at. For example, add a third candleholder from Dollar Tree, but this time use a Round Metal Candle Holder as the base. Since the top is different from the pedestal candleholders, you'll want to ensure that you use plenty of glue on the bottom of the glass jar so it sticks to the round base. Or you can consider the Halloween-Inspired Candle Holders from Dollar Tree as an option for a third candleholder. And if you're really feeling bold, mix and match the pedestal candleholders in your display, opting for one of each. When everything is finally ready, display your rag-tag band of candles with your other Halloween DIYs to create a whole spooky scene that's bound to keep Stingy Jack away from your windows for all of All Hallows' Eve.
