Sourcing authentic vintage decor can not only be expensive, but it can also be extremely time-consuming. If you don't have the budget or time to go vintage shopping every weekend, but you have a specific piece in mind for your home, consider making it yourself with thrifted items.
Glass cloches are vintage decor that's making a comeback and can be used to display lots of different items. They work for everything from home-baked goods to cosmetics and seasonal decor. Available in varying shapes and sizes, these simple glass cases are a lovely way to showcase a special object. However, finding a genuine vintage one can be hard to come by. Luckily, you may be able to find a couple of unwanted items at a thrift store that can be transformed into a gorgeous cloche — and you really don't have to be a DIY expert.
YouTuber @susieonthefarm created a beautiful collection of glass cloches with some simple thrift store pickups. All you're going to need is an old glass candle holder or a vase, something to use as a base and a handle (like a used chopping board and a wooden knob), and a glue gun. This solution offers the best of both worlds. You are repurposing old, unwanted items and giving them a new lease of life, whilst also getting the satisfaction of making your own piece of decor at a fraction of the price.sd
How to make your own vintage-inspired cloche
First, source a thrifted glass vessel that is open on one side. A glass candle holder or a vase would work well for this. If you want to replicate the traditional bell jar shape, then look for an item that is fluted. Next, find a wooden knob to use as the handle — it could come from an old shelf or door — and attach it to the glass vessel with a glue gun.
The next thing to consider is what you will use as the base. For that vintage look, finding a wooden base is key. You can thrift a larger piece of wood and cut it down to size, or purchase a pre-made one. This 30-Inch Wood Circle from Amazon is ideal. If the color of your wooden base and handle are different, you can use a wood stain on the lighter item to darken it.
You can customize your wooden base with a decorative trim. A fun way of doing this would be to add a string of beads around the edge. Use your glue gun to stick these down, and make sure you've left enough room for your glass jar to sit flat on your cloche base. It's now time to pop your special object inside and display it with pride.
