The IKEA Fall Wreath You Can DIY With Dollar Tree Items

Colorful fall leaves have a kind of wild, raw beauty that takes the breath away. IKEA's HÖSTAGILLE fall wreath manages to capture some of the effervescent hues of the season, despite the leaves on the wreath being only an imitation of the real thing. But Dollar Tree crafters have a little something to bring to the conversation: the ingenuity to turn a few DT supplies into a gold, red, and brown fall wreath that's barely distinguishable from IKEA's.

If you want your fall home decor to include this affordable wreath, you'll need to be ready to fire up the ol' glue gun to stick some of Dollar Tree's assorted fall leaves onto a wire wreath frame. At Dollar Tree, these supplies come in a variety of sizes and shades, and ultimately, the choice is up to you. The parameters of your decision should be based on how much of the door you hope to cover and where you'd like to hang the wreath on the door.

To that end, we'll recommend trying Dollar Tree's 18-inch Floral Garden Metal Wreath Form. Since most standard doors are about 36 inches wide, the largest DT wreath frame size would likely work best. As far as the leaves are concerned, you'll have the best luck with a combination of loose leaves and leaves attached to a stem. Dollar Tree has a couple of good choices, including their Polyester Maple Leaves and Maple Bouquet. Finally, you'll need a good pair of scissors.

Fashioning your own version of the IKEA wreath

With all of your supplies in front of you, trim the longest portion of the stems on the leaf bundles. This should still leave you with several clusters of leaves on shorter stems that you can glue to the wreath form (and wrap around the wires). The advantage of creating more height variation is that it gives the wreath more volume and texture, making it appear more natural. In other words, the leaves will hang on the wreath more like they do when hanging on a tree — some leaves will hug the wire frame, while others will stand on the end of a sprig.

If you're planning to wrap some of the plastic stems around the wire wreath frame, you should start with that. You may find that the longest parts of the stems on the leaf bouquets are a little too brittle to twist around the wreath frame. If that's the case, try twisting shorter stems around the form: The plastic near where the leaf is stuck to the plastic stem is usually the most pliable. After that, glue some single leaves here and there until any holes in the arrangement are covered. View your wreath from multiple angles and continue adding individual leaves and clusters until the entire frame is covered and the thin, patchy spots are gone.

Leveling up your fall creation

While you can construct this stunning fall wreath with items that are available at the Dollar Tree, others are available elsewhere at prices that aren't much higher. For example, floral tape, such as DSUWAZU Dark Green Floral Tape, can be wrapped around the wire frame to keep the leaf stems in place. It's also great for hiding unsightly stems that you just can't make look right. It's not a Dollar Tree find, but the price of it is cheap nonetheless.

As is, this wreath is lovely because it taps into the colors of fall. However, since you're making your own bespoke version of the IKEA leaf wreath, it's perfectly acceptable to add on other decorative elements, such as Floral Garden Polyester Burlap Ribbon and FeiLix Lifelike Curly Willow Branches, which add to the rustic charm of the piece without overpowering it with extra details. If rustic decor is your thing, these are definitely beautiful items to add. Other fun, fall-ish items to add would include miniature cattails, pine cones, small pumpkins, and acorns. Anything that's got an autumn vibe is fair game.
