Not all Halloween decor can naturally fit in with every interior design aesthetic. Lately, there's been a huge resurgence in kitschy, '90s Halloween decor. But while this outdated fall decor style might be making a nostalgic comeback, the loud, over-the-top trend isn't everyone's cup of tea. Just because you prefer a country kitchen aesthetic doesn't mean you can't tap into your own festive style. There are plenty of classic, traditional pieces you can use to decorate for fall. Small, patterned pumpkins are a great option to use in a country-style home. With some simple materials and a bit of DIY magic, you can craft your own beautiful, chinoiserie-patterned pumpkins.

For this fall decor DIY project, you'll need small, white craft pumpkins. For the best results, opt for ones with a matte surface. You can find these at Hobby Lobby or Dollar Tree. You'll also need Mod Podge, a foam brush, and napkins with a country-inspired print. Look for patterns such as chinoiserie, botanical, or toile de jouy. These Coterie blue floral cocktail napkins would be ideal.

How to make patterned pumpkins

In essence, this project involves pasting printed napkins onto your pumpkins. Start by separating the white lining of the napkin from the printed layer. Now cut your napkins into 3 to 5-inch strips. Use your foam sponge to apply the Mod Podge on a small section of your pumpkin. Paste the printed napkin strip by strip all the way around your pumpkin, slightly overlapping each section. Add a final layer of Mod Podge on top of the napkins to seal the project completely. The result is a stunning, unique, patterned pumpkin that will look right at home with your country kitchen aesthetic.

If you want to further customize this DIY, expand beyond just printed napkins. There is an array of different materials you can use to create modern farmhouse-inspired pumpkin decor. Basically, anything flat and pliable will stick to the surface of a craft pumpkin using Mod Podge. Some other fun materials to work with are burlap leaves, pressed flowers, or feathers. The same process as above will apply to any of these materials. Simply apply Mod Podge, place the material in the desired location, and seal it up with one last layer of the Mod Podge. You can cover the entire pumpkin or simply add a few pieces as a modest embellishment. And there you have it, the perfect addition to your country kitchen this fall!
