Say Goodbye To The Eyesore Of Countertop Clutter With One Sleek Dollar Tree DIY

There's no rule that says the item you use to keep your kitchen counters clutter-free has to be solely functional. A luxurious stone dish holds items like keys, loose change, grocery receipts, and even a few apples or oranges just as well as an ugly bowl does. The problem for some happy home decorators, however, is that the stoneware bowl they like doesn't fit into their budget — not even with the help of a shoehorn. Fortunately, for those who have access to Dollar Tree and minimal crafting skills, a stoneware bowl is just an afternoon of crafting away. Making one yourself can mean the difference between paying $25 to $45 (or more) for a bowl and spending less than $20.

You'll need a Floral Garden Plastic Terrarium 9.5-inch Dish and a Round Glass Candleholder to make the luxe bowl. Both are items you can find at Dollar Tree, either in the home or garden aisles. Given that the terrarium is made of plastic, you'll want to examine the bowl carefully before buying. You'll be looking for possible blemishes or cracks that could mar the finished product. If the terrarium shows signs of wear and tear, find another one.

Turning the two dishes into one stoneware bowl doesn't require magic. However, you'll need some crafting supplies, including E6000 glue to stick the pieces together. A little baking soda, acrylic paint, a paintbrush, and a medium-sized bowl or painting tin are required to create the stone-like texture, while some Matio Gray Stone Texture Spray Paint (or another stone-textured paint of your choice) gives it a stoneware finish.

How to turn the Dollar Tree items into a stoneware bowl

To give this beautiful home decor bowl its distinct shape, glue the bottom of the terrarium to the top of the glass candleholder using some of the E6000 Craft Adhesive. While you're waiting for the glue to dry, mix up some textured paint. Blend two-thirds of a cup of acrylic paint with one-third of a cup of baking soda and stir. This concoction is what will give the acrylic paint the texture of cement. Apply this mixture to the two bowls, coating both the inside and outside with your paintbrush. If the textured paint doesn't brush on very smoothly, add a tiny bit of water to it. Let the paint dry once you've given the piece a few coats of the textured paint. Then, spray the piece with the stone-textured spray paint to mimic the look of granite or another kind of stone.

If you'd like to create more visual interest, swap out the candleholder and terrarium for the Caterer's Corner Square Silver Plastic Bowl and the Caterer's Corner Wavy Plastic Bowl. (Both are also available at Dollar Tree.) These bowls each have a square bottom, so be sure to align the square shapes before you glue them together. Once glued, paint the piece with the textured paint, and then cover it with the stone-textured spray paint. Finally, if you need more storage options, make more than one bowl to create a set.
