Gumball machines bring many of us back to childhood. Nothing was more exciting than putting a quarter into one at a grocery store or arcade, then opening the flap to receive your treat. These whimsical candy dispensers have been around for over a century, spreading smiles to kids everywhere. Yet, just because you're an adult doesn't mean you can't still have a passion for gumball machines. One DIYer showed how to upcycle a thrifted machine into a charming piece of décor for the kitchen. There's a twist, though. Instead of dispensing bubblegum, it can be filled with other snacks and items that might be more up your alley.

Just like another creative DIYer who showed how to repurpose a clever thrift store flip, Instagram user @breeyashade shared a gumball machine upcycle online. Naturally, it starts with finding an old gumball machine for the base of the project. If you're lucky, there's one sitting in the attic from your younger years. But if not, you might be able to get your hands on a preloved one at your local thrift store. While it's possible to purchase a new one, like this retro-looking Medium Gumball Bank for $31.49, you typically get a better deal shopping secondhand. These types of dispensers come either with a stand or can be placed on a countertop, so decide what seems best for your kitchen.

Upcycle your gumball machine into useful & stylish kitchen décor

A bright red candy dispenser is classic. However, you can also paint it so that it helps bring earthy tones to your home décor. Consider taking the machine apart prior to painting, as you don't want to paint the globe. Once done, you can either leave it as is or decoupage it with beautifully-patterned paper napkins for an antique look. For this, apply a thin coat of Mod Podge to the parts of the machine you want to cover, then place pieces of the napkin on, using only the very top printed layer. After it's dry, seal it with an additional coat of Mod Podge.

Now it's time for the real fun, choosing what to fill your gumball machine with! You can add small snacks like almonds, pistachios, or sunflower seeds — and you'll surely feel like a kid every time you twist the handle. It could also be used to dispense your pet's itty-bitty treats. Or, place it on your counter as a storage piece for miniature kitchen tools and supplies. You could even turn it into a terrarium so you can have a touch of greenery in the space.

If you're looking to add instant rustic charm to your kitchen, you could fill your gumball machine with decorative items like artificial flowers or wooden beads. It'd also be perfect for seashells, glass gems, or polished rocks. Another idea is to swirl a string of fairy lights around the inside of the globe that can be controlled with a remote. It might just become your favorite cozy kitchen light! While a gumball machine in general can stir up nostalgia, how you use it should bring a lot of joy, too.
