Dupe A High-End Accent Wall Mirror For Less With An Affordable Dollar Tree DIY

Some ornate mirrors retail for as much as $500 — take the gold Orbit Mirror at Surya, for example. It's nine interconnected individual mirrors bound to one another by a series of gold bars. This mirror is out of many people's price range. For the budget-conscious crafter, though, wanting this pricey-looking, luxe gold-framed mirror isn't a problem. You can take inspiration from the original and make your own for less than $20, thanks to Dollar Tree. Who says high-end, trendy accent wall mirrors must cost a pretty penny? Not us.

For this DIY, you'll need nine Dollar Tree Mirror Candleholders with Glittery Accents, which come in gold or silver. To make them look connected, as they are in the original piece, you'll additionally need some Crafters Square wood dowels. There are two dowels in a package, so buy five or six packs to ensure you have enough. Craft glue fastens the dowels to the backs of the mirrors, while Rust-Oleum Specialty Metallic Spray Paint in Metallic Gold (or silver) helps the dowels to match the glittered frame on the mirrors.

Other helpful items include a tape measure, a pencil, scissors, a large roll of brown craft paper, and some triangle picture rings. From these items, you'll create a dummy pattern with the paper that'll allow you to replicate the high-end mirror layout of the original before you glue everything together. One of the appeals of the Surya piece is the symmetry between all of the floating mirrors. The symmetry has the added benefit of keeping the mirrors straight until you can hang them up.

How to make the metallic multi-mirror wall piece

Start this project by spray painting the dowels. You'll let them dry while you're laying some PerkHomy Brown Kraft Paper out on the floor. Each round mirror measures 4½ inches across. The dowels you use to connect them are over 15 inches long. Cut a sheet of the craft paper that's wide enough and tall enough to accommodate all nine mirrors, which are arranged three wide by three high. Create some additional space between the mirrors to accommodate the length of the dowels. Draw a grid on the paper where the center point of each mirror will be. If you have digital skills, you can use a tool like Adobe Illustrator to make a grid. Otherwise, a tape measure, a pencil, and a sharp eye will work.

Lay the mirrors face down on the grid. The center of each mirror should be at a point of the grid where the dowels will intersect. Place the dowels on the backs of the mirrors, but don't glue them down yet. The position of the dowels will look like the hands of a clock at 12, three, six, and nine, depending on where each mirror is on the display. Once everything looks even, you can glue the dowels to the backs of the mirror with some E6000 230010 Craft Adhesive. Once the adhesive is dry, glue some QHAJRYYC Small Triangle Ring Steel Picture Hangers on the backs of the top three mirrors and then hang the piece up on your accent wall.

Making the Dollar Tree mirror look more luxe

The gold glitter on the mirrors' frames and the metallic spray paint already give this nine-piece mirror a high-end look, which makes it a striking addition to any accent wall. However, there is a way to make a real visual impact — still at Dollar Tree prices — if you swap out the glitter-framed mirrors and replace them with Dollar Tree's Plastic Round Antique-Style Framed Mirrors. These items resemble the frames on Rococo-style mirrors from the 1700s. Or if you'd like fancy mirrors with a more modern take, look for Dollar Tree's Special Moments Black Decorative Circle Mirrors. While both of these are excellent choices, the antique-style mirrors come in gold, making them a great option for those wanting the metallic look.

It's also possible to experiment with the connecting lines between the mirrors. Instead of having just one dowel between each mirror, try adding two or three parallel dowels to the backs of the mirrors. These additional elements mimic some of the line work you see in Art Nouveau or Art Deco decor styles. The lines from the fancier Dollar Tree mirrors work in tandem with the dowels to make one beautiful wall piece.
