Consumer Reports Data Shows These Are The 3 Best Chainsaws Of 2025 So Far

You'll find hundreds of websites that compare different products and give their opinions, but few are as well-known as Consumer Reports. This independent, nonprofit organization that tests products is said to be the largest of its kind in the world and has been around for 80 years. They were providing reviews way before the internet even existed. So when we set out to find the three best chainsaws of 2025, their comprehensive report was a natural place to turn. If you're looking for the right chainsaw for firewood, yard work, or gardening, the information they provide can be invaluable.

Each of our top three is in a different category: best large chainsaw, best light-duty gas chainsaw, and best battery-powered chainsaw. We didn't include corded electric chainsaws for a couple of reasons. If you're concerned about how to safely use a chainsaw, then having a cord that can get snagged, accidentally cut, or present a trip hazard is a recipe for disaster. Also, experts recommend 50 to 75 feet as the maximum length for an outdoor extension cord, which restricts the chainsaw's practical use. Gas and cordless models can go anywhere.

Consumer Reports data says the top three chainsaws for 2025 so far are the Echo CS-590-18, the Echo CS-3510, and the Ego CS2005. Let's look at each in a little more detail.

Echo are beating out the big name chainsaw brands

When it comes to pro chainsaws, Husqvarna and STIHL are arguably the market leaders, yet according to Consumer Reports, the big Echo CS-590-18 with its 18-inch bar (blade length) is the best large chainsaw overall. It gets top marks for cutting speed and ease of use, and it handles well despite weighing 18 pounds. A five-year warranty should reassure potential buyers about its durability. The only downside mentioned was that it was very noisy, but that's hardly unusual for gas-powered chainsaws.

Cutting efficiency and handling were also features of the best light-duty gas chainsaw, the Echo CS-3510. This has a 16-inch bar and, like its larger sibling, also has a convenient chain brake and a user-friendly anti-vibration mechanism. Consumer Reports said it has ample power for routine tasks, making it a great all-rounder. Interestingly, while marks for reliability are no better than average, the brand gets top scores for owner satisfaction.

The best cordless chainsaw of 2025 is from Ego, a brand that also appeared in our list of the nine best budget chainsaws money can buy. The Ego CS2005 is a bigger tool, with a premium price tag. Its 20-inch bar is as big as any chainsaw on the Consumer Reports list and is a reflection of how far cordless power has come. Once again, it rates highly for cutting speed, handling, and ease of use, and of course, it's also very quiet. However, at 19.1 pounds, it is even heavier than the big Echo.
