DeWalt's reputation for quality and durability is outstanding, and it has been voted the most reliable power tool brand, according to user reviews. So to hear there is a DeWalt tool that even fans say to avoid buying is something of a surprise and demands a closer look. The tool in question is the DeWalt Jump Starter with Digital Compressor and USB Power Bank, which is available in 1,600, 2,000, and 2,500 amp versions.
A check of the specifications suggests this is a powerful solution to a number of problems. The jump starter is compatible with almost all battery types, and output should be sufficient to start most car and truck motors with up to eight cylinders. It will also check your alternator. The 120 psi compressor will inflate everything from vehicle tires to sports balls, and the power pack will charge USB-A and USB-C devices. An LCD screen lets you know what's going on, and there's also an LED light if you need to work in the dark. Starting at $169, it's not cheap, but it's not easy to find alternatives that offer such a comprehensive range of features.
Over at Home Depot, over 900 customers have given DeWalt's combined jump starter, compressor, and power bank an average of 4.2 stars. While that's not as high as some DeWalt tools, it doesn't really suggest it should be avoided. However, only 44% would recommend it. Clearly, there are issues.
Some users aren't happy with DeWalt's Jump Starter Power Station
On the plus side, you have satisfied buyers, like the one who called it a "miniature hero," having used it to resolve all kinds of problems. People appreciate its performance and versatility. Unfortunately, a significant minority have experienced a variety of different failures or breakages, and even those who were big enough fans of DeWalt tools to get a replacement have sometimes been disappointed a second time. Faults vary from inaccurate pressures from the compressor or complete breakdowns to LCD malfunctions. It's not unknown for smoke to come out of the jump starter or for the internal battery to run down, rendering it useless.
The device is available through several online retailers, though you should check carefully before buying DeWalt tools at Amazon. However, it cannot be found on DeWalt's own website. Although there has been no notification we know of to indicate it has been discontinued, that could well be the case.
It's not often that fans say to avoid DeWalt, and to be fair, the majority of feedback at Home Depot and other retailers is positive. That said, there are enough negatives that you may want to look elsewhere. This is one of those rare DeWalt tools that reviewers say you should think twice about buying.
