Woman's Smart IKEA Solution Keeps Laundry Off The Floor & Organized In A Small Bathroom
Collecting, organizing, and sorting is a crucial part of doing laundry, but it can feel more like an almost impossible challenge when your home has limited bathroom space and barely enough room for one laundry basket, let alone two for lights and darks. So, where does all your dirty laundry end up? For many, it piles on the floor, making an already cramped space feel even more cluttered. But as Instagram creator @herzenstimme discovered, IKEA has once again come in clutch with a clever laundry storage solution that helps keep things tidy and gives you the ability to sort your clothes by style and color to make your laundry routine as efficient as possible. And the best part is that you don't need to keep a bulky laundry basket on the floor anymore. It's not magic — it's IKEA's 6-gallon GÅRDSBUTIK bin in a popular and versatile gray-beige shade.
The GÅRDSBUTIK bin retails for $40 and comes with a pull-out bin and wall bracket. It measures 18 inches high, a little over 14 inches wide, and only needs about 8 inches of depth, so it won't jut out too far from the wall. The wall bracket mounts to the wall using either wall anchors and screws or adhesive strips and small hooks (sold separately). Once full, the bins slide out effortlessly, so you can carry them straight to the washer and dump everything in. What's also nice is that the top of the unit has a slightly depressed area where you could store small items, like decor and toiletries, or place your jewelry and accessories when you hop in the shower.
Rid your bathroom floor of laundry piles with IKEA GÅRDSBUTIK bins
Space is the deciding factor in how many IKEA GÅRDSBUTIK bins you can comfortably fit inside your bathroom. If you have enough wall space for four (two side by side and two stacked just above), you'll have the luxury of sorting lights, darks, delicates, and even towels. Four bins in a two-by-two pattern will take up a space about 36 inches high and 28 inches wide. If you only have room for two (either stacked or side by side), at least you can still keep your lights and darks/brights separate so the pigments don't bleed into each other. This keeps things partially separated and, most importantly, off your bathroom floor.
Once you've decided how many IKEA GÅRDSBUTIK bins you want, the next step is mounting them. You could drill them directly into the wall, using an appropriate drywall anchor type for a secure hold, but some people have used self-adhesive hooks (like the TIPPVAGN hooks) in a more rental-friendly approach. To be extra cautious, use a tape hack to protect the wall from damage when using Command hooks or other strong self-adhesive options. Regardless of whether you use screws or hooks, use the built-in mounting holes as guides to measure and mark where they'll go. Then, simply hang your bins and let the sorting begin. If you're still unsure how many bins to get, it's good to know that each can comfortably hold about half the amount of clothing as a standard plastic basket, or roughly half a medium load of laundry. At this point, it seems all that's left to do is figure out which wall they'll fit best and how many bins you want to install.
