Bedroom Furniture That Belongs In Your Kitchen

Whether we like it or not, many of us spend the bulk of our time at home in the kitchen. Between prepping, cooking, and cleaning up after three meals a day, and in many cases eating those meals in the kitchen as well, it's the room that often serves as the center of family life. But with so many hard surfaces, stainless steel appliances, and kitchen decor, it can be easy for this room to feel cold and off-putting. Fortunately, there are lots of ways to make a cold kitchen instantly feel cozy, and one easy solution is to bring in furniture from the coziest place in your home: the bedroom.

While this idea may seem odd at first blush, many bedroom items can actually fit perfectly in your kitchen as well. A small lamp that you might usually keep on a nightstand, for example, adds a lovely touch of ambient lighting to kitchen spaces that may otherwise have overly harsh lighting. You may be surprised to find that many pieces of bedroom furniture work great in kitchens too and can bring that added touch of coziness as well as practicality and function. Here are seven pieces from the bedroom to consider incorporating in your cooking space.

Bookshelves

Many of us like to have bookshelves in our bedrooms so that our favorite novels and other tomes are easily on hand at bedtime. But bookshelves can also make life easier in the kitchen as a space for keeping cookbooks, recipes, and kitchen-related periodicals organized. Plus, you can also use some of that shelving to display your prettiest dinnerware, pottery, or glasses.

Dressers

If you're short on kitchen cabinet space, dressers that you might usually reserve for holding clothes, socks, and other items in the bedroom can actually make a great storage option in the kitchen for holding pots, pans, and cooking supplies — and add a beautiful touch of personal style. In fact, interior designer and HGTV host Nate Berkus says a chest of drawers is the perfect piece of bedroom furniture to incorporate in your kitchen. Bonus: The top of the dresser can double as some extra counter space, too.

Headboards

A very unexpected yet cool piece of bedroom furniture that you can use in your kitchen? Headboards. Though usually restricted to the bedroom, headboards are often intricately carved, gorgeous pieces of art in and of themselves, so why not try a DIY project using an old headboard to cover up that unsightly stove range hood? Or, if you don't have the space or ability to commit to using an entire headboard in your kitchen, you can try breaking off smaller pieces and lining them along the wall behind your sink or other bare kitchen walls for some added texture and character.

Small desks

Kitchens are often the heart and soul of a house and family life, bustling not only with cooking activity but also with schoolwork and after-hours office work. If you have a little desk or dressing table and chair that usually sits in your bedroom, try incorporating it in your kitchen instead. Kids can use it for homework while you're cooking dinner, and you can use it for work-from-home or house admin tasks while still being part of all that family activity.

Nightstands

If you don't have room for a whole dresser in your kitchen, nightstands can be a beautiful addition from your bedroom that's more compact yet also handy. A lovely wood nightstand is one way that can help make your kitchen look a bit more cottagecore and can also serve as a great place to store random knickknacks, such as napkins, table linens, measuring cups, and other baking supplies.

Mirrors

You're probably already familiar with the wonders that mirrors can do to make a room feel bigger and brighter. So why not bring some of that mirror magic into your kitchen? Vanity mirrors that would usually sit atop a bedroom dresser can stand on your kitchen counters or along backsplashes. Alternatively, try fitting a narrow full-length mirror on an empty wall, in a spare corner, or even on the door of your kitchen pantry.

End-of-bed benches

A bench at the foot of the bed is one of those little final touches that can complete a bedroom. In fact, end-of-bed benches are a bedroom feature that HGTV's The Property Brothers love. And because benches intended for the bedroom are often made of plush or cozy materials that make a room warm and welcoming, incorporating one as seating in your kitchen can bring those homey vibes into your cooking space, too. Plus, since benches at the ends of beds are often made to double as storage, you can also use them to store things like baskets, bowls, and other kitchenware items.
