Finding new and innovative ways to clear countertop clutter and implement kitchen storage is a pain. It seems like new products are hitting the stores every day with this goal in mind, but many of them are so generic looking (not to mention overpriced). Fortunately, if you get your creative juices flowing, you can make something that suits your style and doesn't break the bank. All you need are some old jars and a few rolls of washi tape. Wrap the lid until the metal is completely covered, and suddenly, you've got a whole new container. Since there are plenty of clever ways to reuse old glass jars around the house, you also don't have to limit yourself to the kitchen.

The great thing about this project is the amount of customization available. Washi tape comes in a wide range of colors and patterns, and you can add decals or stickers on top or inside to personalize each jar. With an application of Dishwasher-Safe Mod Podge, you could even seal your new creation for safe cleaning. After applying your washi tape, apply the sealant with a high-quality brush or small foam roller for a stroke-free and smooth finish. This is an excellent beginner-friendly countertop storage DIY to make the most of your space, and it's eco-friendly because you're keeping perfectly good glass out of the trash.

Breathing new life into old jars with a washi tape DIY

Before starting on this project, you'll need to pick out a few glass jars that suit your fancy. If you don't want to use the recyclables at home, look at your local thrift store for an antique find. Colored or textured glass makes a big impact on the style score. You can even use a Dollar Tree jar to DIY instant kitchen storage that looks so charming when filled with spices, dried pasta, or anything else you like. You'll also need tape for the lid, like Mr. Pen Washi Tape – it comes in a wide range of colors and prints, making it easy to personalize. If you want to kick the design up a notch, grab a few decals to add to the underside of each lid or something for the front of the glass, like EoBeCy's Floral Cup Wraps. With supplies prepped, it's time to get crafting.

Thoroughly wash and dry each container and top. Wrap the cap in washi tape until no metal is showing. Try to keep the strips even and running in the same direction. The ends should meet on the underside of the lid for a cleaner appearance on top. Apply a decal on the bottom, and add a label if desired. Finish by applying your sealant over the lid and letting it cure for a couple of hours, or personalize your creation with a coat of paint for a stained or sea glass look. Alternatively, repurpose some wrapping paper, magazine pages, or other scrap pieces for a lid collage, using your Mod Podge to glue everything down. However you choose to decorate your creation, you'll have one-of-a-kind countertop storage without overspending or buying the same product as everyone else.
