'Imagine Cleaning This': Homeowners React To Nightmare Fuel Half-Bath Reno
Growing up in Seattle at the height of the rave era, I thought I had seen it all. Trust me when I say I've experienced many a psychedelic-inspired bathroom. I have witnessed homes that were occupied by bored goth 20-somethings expressing their personalities through Tim Burton-themed bedroom, living room, and kitchen décor. But nothing could have prepared me for what I witnessed on a Reddit post titled, "DIY All Mirrored Half-Bathroom, Floor to Ceiling" by this user. My first thought was, "I have so many questions." Let's just say, it feels like a portal to another dimension. And the internet be internetting with this one.
While this renovation might be a bathroom design mistake that could hurt this DIYer's home value, one commenter had this to say, "I've always thought small half baths are a great opportunity to do the craziest big swings you can." And this post truly has people torn about whether it was a genius move or a huge disaster. Like many things on the internet, the original poster has created a huge conversation around whether or not we should follow our personal tastes to their ultimate conclusion. And the comments section is truly filled with hilarious, strong opinions.
A bathroom that might be a portal to another dimension according to reddit
The bathroom in question features floor to ceiling hand-cut mirrors as tiles, an epoxy toilet seat with embedded LEDs, and a mirror-finished stainless-steel countertop featuring a clear sink bowl. The original poster said they broke a lot of mirrors to get the tiled look and had to put down a layer of ¼-inch-thick solid epoxy on the floor to prevent it from breaking. I guess that's one way to upcycle old mirrors around the house.
When explaining how their design came to be, the homeowner said they were inspired by, "Flight of the Navigator's silvery spaceship, and Yayoi Kusama's infinity mirrors." I tend to agree with many commenters on the post who thought it reminded them of the final scene in the movie "Interstellar." "If you take a flash photo in here, you'll end up on a distant planet with Anne Hathaway and you'll be 120 years old. Probably worth it." I personally can't imagine ending up in that bathroom after a night out having drinks.
Is it functional or just fantasy?
To be honest, as a homeowner, besides the obvious issue of feeling like you've entered the Phantom Zone upon entry to this bath, my thought is, "Glad I don't have to clean that!" As one commenter said, "Working on a dirty spot for 10 minutes only to realize it's behind you." Not to mention the amount of glass cleaner you'd have to keep on hand. I wasn't alone in that observation, someone else commented, "Needs a case of Windex every week."
Look, we've all made questionable design choices. I myself once painted my entire home office Tiffany Blue and let me tell you, one wall would have been enough. Usually there's a sweet spot when it comes to design, where expressing your personality and functionality should meet. But if the OP doesn't care about the long-term effects of their half bath reno on their home value, then more power to them. I honestly agree with the commenter who had this to say, "I love to live in a world where this exists, but I'm extremely happy to live in a house where it doesn't. Great job you absolute mad lad!"
